The ideas which make up the theory are not new; they represent an eclectic combination of elements from the quality movement, matrix management, systems theory, and organisational development and culture, to name a few. What is unique is the way in which Senge combined them into a holistic theory of organisational effectiveness.
Conventional 'training' is required to cover essential work-related skills, techniques, and knowledge, and much of this section deals with taking a positive progressive approach to this sort of traditional 'training'. Importantly, however, the most effective way to develop people is quite different from conventional skills training.
