Ideally, the main goal that drove the enlightenment thinkers were progressiveness, tolerance, liberty, reason, and putting an end to the abuses of the church and the state. In France, most of the thinkers were driven by religious tolerance and individual liberty, and they were very much against the absolute monarchical government system.
