At first Oskar reports striking visual changes, such as the appearance of Hitler’s portrait on the wall which Alfred is determined to display. Significantly, Oskar’s mother Agnes has a less extreme view of things, and argues that the “gloomy” (p. 115) Beethoven picture should stay in the room alongside the equally gloomy Hitler, rather than being banished to let Hitler take the whole space.
