According to the research findings, one of the most famous nautical navigators in Whitby is the British explorer Captain James Cook who honed his maritime skills in the vast seaport of Whitby. Today, the Captain Cook museum is one of the most famous spots in the area where visitors can enter a 17th-century house near Whitby harbor where Captain Cook prepared his voyage to Australia. One can also discover and relive how the great captain was able to build the ships Endeavour, Resolution, Adventure and Discovery for the historic journey to ‘the land down under’. Aside from its picturesque harbor, Whitby also showcases a dark yet fascinating history behind its rustic scenery. This is because the image of Dracula and Whitby are tangled together in the famous novel of Bram Stoker. It was said that the author of Dracula was mesmerized and inspired by the place after staying at a house on West Cliff, Whitby around 1890 that he used the fascinating English town as the backdrop of his novel. The atmosphere of the town captivated him, especially when he saw the surrounding red roofs, the cathedral with tombstones, and blackbirds flying around the churches. In fact, one of the characters in the novel Dracula named Mina took note of the eerie backdrop of Whitby as “the noblest ruin, of immense size, and full of beautiful and romantic bits”. Surely, the author was inspired by the magical atmosphere of the town that he made it as a scenic backdrop for the classic novel. It is not surprising how many visitors of Whitby are intrigued by the association of the town with Dracula that they cannot resist to check out the mystic of Whitby Yorkshire. Aside from its creepy connection with Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the seaside town of Whitby is also famously known as the ‘Goth Capital of Great Britain”.
