Understanding the Israel-Palestinian conflict has been one of the most difficult things in the world. However, after reading the books, In the Land of Israel and The Yellow Wind by Amos Oz and David Grossman respectively, one starts to get some insights into why the conflict began in the first place, and why it is not coming to an end.
In the Dreyfus affair back in the 1894, the then French captain of Jewish origin Alfred Dreyfus was falsely accused of treason, was convicted and imprisoned in Guiana. Later, it was proved that French anti-Semitism was to blame for the mistaken conviction.
One of the key social changes that took place is regarding the gender relations. With the majority of the men joining the war, women were called to fill the vacancies in the industries, which changed the stereotypical role of women as homemakers. (Goldstein 2001) However, with the returning men form the War deprived of job opportunities, and with the women wanting to hold on their jobs and the newly acquired statuses, it lead to maximal changes in the gender relations.
As most of Europe was devastated by the war, the US soon emerged as one of the major economic and political powers. The Soviet Union was also able to rebuild and was eyeing improvements in its military capability. This same military prowess was also one of the major goals of the US.
As stated by President Abraham Lincoln, the war brought to America “a new birth of freedom”. Since the war had been initiated to end slavery and redefine freedom, the post-civil war brought exactly that (Digital History, 2012). The post-civil war period is widely known as the ‘Reconstruction’ period, which began at the end of the Civil War.
