In her introduction to the first edition of the work, Mary Hemingway defines it as being a biography, in part because it is less about himself and more about other people. The emphasis of the novel is not so much on a direct narrative, but a series of anecdotes, each painting a portrait of a particular niche of Hemingway’s life during that time.
This fall from grace is what makes the play into a tragedy. The key question which might help to resolve the paradoxes in Othello’s character is whether his demise is due to his own personal failings, or whether he is the victim of Iago’s evil plotting.
