The Principles and Objectives Discussed in Brave New World and Animal Farm - Essay Example

 Every piece of literature can be considered as propaganda since it promulgates some ideas or information. The power of pen lies in the success of the kind of swirl it makes in the mind of the readers. Thus literature is a medium to transfer propaganda. In this way the famous novel s “Animal Farm” by George Orwell and “Brave New World” by Huxley play unique roles to transmit what the writers want to. Both writers used their characters as a mouthpiece for expressing their ideas. Both the writers were fierce opponents of political oppression and social injustice and that was well grounded in their own life experience. The books successfully used propaganda by the powerful manipulation of language to cause distractions in the minds of listeners and to keep away from reality. The text books are warning notes to the present economy, politics, religion and the other muscular influential powers that rule the country. The principles and objectives discussed in these books obviously proclaims that they are inconsistent and that will not remain forever. In Brave New World Huxley shows his cynic attitude towards modern political systems and ‘ism. He is indignant towards the political strife’s that go on in the world. He was against all types of political parties, dictatorships or totalitarianism. In dictatorship individuals become tools to serve the ends of the state or political system. Propaganda, suppression of truth or alternation of the past history are the means of political control over the masses. The powerful use of language to propagate dystopian ideas is well utilized in this novel. According to Huxley “A really efficient totalitarian state would be one in which all powerful executives of political bosses and their army of managers control a population of slaves who do not have to coerced, because they love their servitude. To make them love, it is the task assigned, in present day totalitarian states, to ministers of propaganda, newspaper editors, and the school teachers”. In Brave new world Mustapha Mond is the spokesman who is found to be intelligent and knowledgeable. He and his general public used the structure of dictatorship to control the civilized people of Brave New World. Mustapha Mond’s first introduction to the students was enough to stir the minds. He presents a rosy picture of the new world before them . He says “the old men work , the old men copulate , the old men have no time, no leisure from pleasure, not a moment to sit down and think. “. He propagates the idea of an ‘ordered’ society. Most of the characters in Brave New World are types and have little by way of individuality. . For example the director epitomizes the bureaucrat, the controller represents the competent and intelligent man whose intelligence and capability is directed to the achievements of unworldly ends. The savage stands for the type of people who may be rewarded as the antithesis of the scientifically conditioned members of the society as found in future world. Just to make a difference between the people of artificially made world and the real world, Huxley create savage, John in this novel. There Mustapha comes with a new propaganda. About science and art he says “It isn’t only art that’s incompatible with happiness; it’s also science. Science is dangerous; we have to keep it most carefully chained and muzzled”. This message is a propaganda that Huxley propagates now to the spectators. But the propaganda fails to convince the savage. There is immediate conflict between what the savage expects and what he finds between his assumptions and those of the society in which he lives and finds himself. When Mustapha Mond says about the choices which he can accept, after listening to all he answers “I claim them all’ and selects the path to self –destruction. Thus both the novels successfully use the tool of propaganda to convince the listeners. In Animal farm there is a new world which is governed by animals. The rulers, the leading powers etc are animals themselves. A close examination shows that the propaganda is used in different ways by different characters. For Snowball the propaganda is a powerful positive tool to obtain the support of other animals in creating a windmill. At the same time Napoleon l use propaganda in a conflicting way to banish Snowball and his mission. At first when animals decide to react against the supreme power of humans, Snowball uses propaganda to get the leadership of Animal Farm. “Vote for Snowball and the three day week….” through this Snowball was able to get the support of animal world. The support he receives from the animal world visibly shows the influence of propaganda. They all agree to build the windmill. Napoleon, who says the contradictory ideas with that of Snowball, uses propaganda to spread his thought s and dreams to the other animals I the Animal Farm. . But Napoleon planned his wicked thoughts against Snowball and finally he was destroyed. Napoleon, seemingly true to his words and deeds, was a deceitful. He was so perfidious that he became the ruler in the windmill, through the use of propaganda. The language was sufficient to influence the listeners. The way in which the animal’s seven commandments are reduced to one commandment is an example of language manipulation. The inhabitants accept propaganda slowly through the gradual alteration in the language. The forth commandment “No animals shall sleep in a bed is later made to “No animals shall sleep in a bed with sheets”. The strong protest of the man made things was shown through manipulating language. The reduction of the seven commandments to one is a very good example of the use of language to propagate ideas.” All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others “ Napoleon was the conscious creation of Orwell to represent Stalin, who propagated that he could mould Russia. Instead of that it was clear from the history that the reign had created many problems. Napoleon in Animal Farm keeps his own disciples exactly as Stalin kept secret police. Squealer is another efficient propagandist who manipulates the animals through his authoritative words. He says “surely you don’t want Jones back”. His explanations of why the milk and apples should be given to pigs, why Napoleon should preside over the committee etc are examples of language manipulation to get the support of others. Later we can see Squealer’s propaganda stirs Snowball and the other animals consider her as a traitor with the help of Boxer.. He uses Boxer to spread the false news that Snowball is a coward and exaggerates the bravery of Napoleon at the scene of the battle. The pigs were able to increase their control of the farm through manipulating language so that nobody argues against them. . Consequently Propaganda is found very influential with authority.
