Various past studies that have focused on reading comprehension and the fluency in reading have mainly sought to analyze the impact that reading fluency has on reading comprehension, the level of reading fluency growth rate, and how much skill is predictive of future capabilities in reading achievement (Kim, Petscher, Schatschneider, and Foorman 662; Tannenbaum, Torgesen, and Wagner 389).
Past researches indicated that over 69 million children fail to attend elementary school. 54 percent of these are girls. Once in school, these girls are faced with numerous challenges unlike their male counterparts, and there are more likely to drop out their school before successfully completing their studies in primary and elementary schools.
The politics of the day usually affect education systems in one way or another. Many are times when schools are affected by politics, for example, when there is political instability, there is insecurity therefore, students will fear going to school and parents will also be concerned. This disrupts the normal learning hence affecting the overall delivery and performance.
Participants perceived distance education with a positive attitude. However, lack in the use of technology such as using computers and the internet could pose a challenge for students. This is in line with Cordesman's (2009) findings that a major challenge in pursuing distance learning among Saudi girls and women is the high computer illiteracy among this group.
