The article “A Study of the Impact of Fatigue on Human Raters when Scoring Speaking Responses” was conducted in 2014 by Ling, Mollaun, and Xu. Informed by a research gap on the impact of time-related fatigue on rating quality in language testing, the authors set out to examine the effects of fatigue on human raters’ scoring performance within the context of the TOEFL iBT Speaking Test.
The survey/ interview was carried out at Brigham Young University’s English Language Center (ELC) in the United States. The population under study was 47 advanced-low to advanced-mid ESL students that consisted of the treatment group of 28 students ranging from ages 18 to 45 years and a contrast group of 19 students ranging from ages 18 to 33 years. All were of varied nationalities.
