Personal ment What is your intended major? Discuss how your interest in the developed and describe any experience you have had in thefield — such as volunteer work, internships and employment, participation in student organizations and activities — and what you have gained from your involvement. I am a foreign student with Japan as my country of birth. Of course my country has been known to be the Land of the Rising Sun, which is actually analogous to a land of opportunities and new beginnings. As familial relationships in Japan are close-knit and are extended to relatives and workers of the family, this became the basis for individuals’ feeling of satisfying their social and security needs. Each family member and relationship with extended family brings ties and belonging that further enhance encouragement to pursue one’s dreams in life. The close familial background accorded me with the strong foundations to acknowledge the importance of education in the provision of a stable and sustainable future. Since Japan is a land of scenic beauty surrounded by mountains and oceans, my family emphasized the need to preserve the environment in all its aesthetic value and productive content. When I was in high school in Japan, I was a member of NPO volunteer, an organization committed protect oceans from pollutions. Members work to pick garbage up on beaches, and to delve into further research to determine the kinds of garbage that frequently litter the area. Interestingly, our findings indicate that cigarettes are the number one litter on the shores of Japan. I personally like go to the beach when the shoreline and surrounding areas are immaculately clean and beautiful. I had constantly remunerated on the reasons why people have to make the beach dirty. In addition, I have joined other civic organizations, of which “Beach Angels” in Santa Barbara, is one. The promoters and organizers are committed in the same endeavor as that of the organization in Japan. Volunteer members are requested to pick garbage up, to actively promote and initiate various civic movements to save dolphins, birds and to prevent people from eating endangered and small fishes, among others. By being involved in volunteer work for organizations that are committed to save and protect the environment, I became more aware of the immediate need to act in this favor. The climate change and global warming are all products of man’s irresponsible response to technological breakthroughs. I would like to be instrumental in using technology and higher education to address the impending dangers and natural disasters brought about by climate change. Likewise, Japan has also been known to be a land of seismic activities being the home for nearly 10 percent of the active volcanoes in the world. In this regard, earthquakes are a natural occurrence. I have experienced earthquakes all my life, and how it is ironic that I am choosing a California university to continue my studies. I am well aware that California, like Japan, is also known for their earthquakes. This provided the impetus for my desire to apply at the University of California for a degree in Geography and Environmental Studies. Despite the technology and awareness of addressing emergency situations in times of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, I honestly believe that there is more to learn on this field of endeavor. I wanted to be personally involved in the determination of future scientific breakthroughs on seismology and precise technology to assist in the preparation for addressing natural disasters, which remain to be fortuitous events. 2. Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud, and how does it relate to the person you are? The ultimate experience and personal contribution that made me proud and which I value the most is being the first to graduate high school. This made my parents really proud and extremely happy. From my family in Japan, I am a first child who graduated from high school and was given the privilege to pursue a higher education by applying in college from outside of my country. When I was in elementary school, I was determined to get high grades to enable me to be qualified to apply for entrance examinations for private schools. I got accepted from the highest level of private school in my city despite the challenges I went through. Therefore, I chose to go to the private junior high school which promotes access through high school and in the university once I have complied with all academic requirements well. In elementary school, I initially performed badly on my studies, and I was afraid and apprehensive that I would not escalate to the high school. Fortunately, I pursued high school despite experiencing academic dilemmas. My parents were determined and persisted in reminding me that I do not have to go to high school if I do not want to pursue higher education. Once, I felt I might need to drop out from high school, but my determination and a commitment to achieve enabled me to graduate equipped with an unwavering spirit and a dream to succeed. Within high school life, I could choose to go to a private university in Japan, but I realized I need something extraordinary to exceed the expectations of my friends in high school. I observed that they all did better than me, despite my being more talented and innovative. I realized I need to do more by pursuing higher education in the United States of America, a dream that has evolved through time. This is my ultimate goal to enable me to achieve both personal and professional objectives through delving into an endeavor where I am genuinely interested in: a degree in Geography and Environmental Studies. My personal experience from elementary to high school enabled me to realize that once there is determination and equipped with hard work, patience, and the goal to succeed, one would reach the defined goals. There is no question that the complete support of my parents and family members who all look up to me to reach my dreams made coming to America less daunting. I realized that the experiences and challenges we face through life provide the spark and the impetus to change towards the better. The road to success is never easy. The most successful entrepreneurs got to experience failure time and again to put them back on their toes and try another time. This is what defines the secret to success… learning not to give up, to dream and set high objectives, to always exert the best efforts, to always lend a helping hand, and to be open to more opportunities and heartaches in the future. For success is more rewarding when failures have been experienced and have brought a lasting mark as a reminder to get up and try again. Read More
