This week in the pediatric clinical rotation is one of the notable experiences I have ever had. A vivid turn of events gives a practical lesson and an effective way of learning a lesson on proper clinical practices such as the downing of appropriate personal protective equipment.
The major benefit found was that babies on KMC grow at 30grams per day, which is three times that of an incubator baby, which means less time in hospital. Mothers are also benefited from KMC as it bonds them with the baby immediately and soothes them with the release of oxytocin making the mother calmer.
To avoid this, clear rules and guidelines are important. However, there are times that an NP has to take the risk to go over the line when at stake is the life of the patient. To take this, however, the NP must be sure of what she does. How to strike the balance between self-care and call of duty is a practical question that we always encounter.
