Extract of sample "Nursing Informatics Competencies"

"Nursing Informatics Competencies" is a wonderful example of a paper on care.
After reviewing the functional areas covered in the TIGER competencies file, I have come to the conclusion that all of them (basic computer competencies, information literacy, and information management) are relevant to my current position. I am currently the Chief Nursing Officer at a major referral hospital in my state of residence

Why these Areas are Relevant and why Competencies are Necessary

  • Basic Computer Competencies

The area of basic computer competencies is relevant because as the Chief Nursing Officer in a major referral hospital I need to be able to prepare, edit and manipulate documents that are required for use in my line of work. In addition to this, I need to be able to use the internet for productive purposes. This may include sending and reading emails, conducting research on specific aspects of my profession, and also updating and improving my general knowledge.

  • Information Literacy

Information literacy is critical in my line of work. The ability to review, evaluate and select information for use gives me an easy time especially when I have to make key decisions based on particular data or information. Good information literacy skills also provide me with an opportunity to plan before carrying out tasks and when evaluating performance.

  • Information Management

Information management is, has, and will always be a crucial component of any organization regardless of its field of specialty. As organizations grow and expand, so does information. It is generated every day and at all times, and therefore it is important to identify which information is useful and which is not (Carty 28). Information management competency also gives organizations the ability to compete and even outperform their rivals. Since information is power, managing it well results in positive results across all levels of an organization (Saba & McCormick 37). As a Chief Nursing Officer, I have to be skilled in managing information like patients’ data, as well as hospital and employee records.

Plan for Developing the Competencies

Although I am currently knowledgeable and competent in all the functional areas I have talked about, the learning process never stops. As a consequence, I am ready and willing to develop and improve on the competencies further in order to make me better at what I do. My plan involves furthering my education and by extension building on the level of my competency in those areas. In addition to this, I plan to remain updated and informed by reading books and other sources of information available on the internet. Finally, I will be active in attending seminars, meetings, conferences, discussions, and debates where I can improve my knowledge and gain further experience on how to manage my hospital better. At my place of work, I have access to a well-stocked library and a stable internet connection; I plan to take full advantage of these two vital resources as I embark on the quest to develop my nursing informatics competencies.

How Developing Nursing Informatics Competencies would increase my Effectiveness as a Nurse

It would allow me to be a better manager of people and resources, as well as elevate me to higher levels of skill in general. In addition to this, I would be able to improve the performance of my hospital as well as myself; this would give me a crucial advantage over other rival referral hospitals not just in my state but also countrywide (Thede & Jeanne 16).
