In this paper, the researcher intends to understand the background of work-related stress among nurses, to identify the risks and implications involved in the issue of work-related stress in nursing, to know its implications in terms of workforce, health and economy and to be able to discuss the effective solutions proposed in addressing this issue.

The case selected for study is about a 35-year-old patient by name James admitted to the high dependency unit with mild ARDS. James was brought to the Emergency Department on a Saturday evening following a sudden onset of breathlessness. He was suffering from fever, cold and cough from 2 days prior to that. 

The social history of the patient indicates she had been a smoker, lives alone, with one son staying in the United States with his family. The patient has complicated lung disease, which has characteristic exacerbations and remissions. The patient presented with restlessness, agitation, dyspnoea, disorientation, and confusion.

The principle of non-maleficence is basically supported by the statement, ‘first, do no harm.’ In other words, the health practitioners must not act in ways which would harm the patient. Decisions and health care services administered to the patient must not cause him harm or worsen his condition. 

The paper aims at delving into central leadership concepts forwarded in the text, relating various qualities of leadership (presented) in terms of their application to nursing. This will involve portraying relations between these concepts, and how such leadership concepts can be utilized successfully in the present and future nursing practice.
