Many studies in this regard have revealed that clinical intervention proved to be successful, to some extent, in dealing with the psychological problems of women who had undergone a miscarriage. However, some lacunae in the procedures have made this process less advantageous. The literature review was conducted with the aim of determining the effectiveness of nursing care while dealing with the psychological distress experienced after a miscarriage. In this endeavor, many research studies conducted by eminent researchers, relating to this problem, had been examined.

The recommendations made by several authorities have been discussed. Finally, several conclusions will be arrived at regarding the development of nursing care, with reference to psychological treatment in instances of early miscarriage. Miscarriage or pregnancy loss is a major global problem, for women. It results in considerable distress for women, who are more likely to undergo grief and a feeling of bereavement. It is the duty of the nurses and medical personnel to come to the rescue of such grief-stricken women and to provide them with emotional support and medical care.

Moreover, miscarriage is a common complication in pregnancy, and the Scottish Audit of the Management of Early Pregnancy Loss has disclosed that ten to twenty percent of all pregnancies involve miscarriages. In Scotland, the Scottish Morbidity Records are utilized to determine miscarriage cases. There were nearly 4206 clinical miscarriage cases in Scotland in the year 1998-1999. Not all the instances of miscarriage are registered in the SMR registers, on account of the fact that some women are managed in the primary healthcare centers.

In addition, there are women who do not register or get admitted to hospitals, during their pregnancy. As such, the actual number of miscarriages has not been exactly determined in Scotland. The SMR registers merely indicate the number of miscarriages that had taken place in the hospitals. Moreover, the management of early pregnancy loss was found to be unsatisfactory. The chief cause attributed to this deplorable situation was the inordinate delay between referrals to primary care and the provision of treatment in secondary care hospitals.

The Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists states that nurses and hospital staff must undergo training in emotional psychology so that they are well equipped to treat early pregnancy loss. Couples must be provided with the support and assistance during a pregnancy loss. This will help them to counter long-term impacts and the consequences of a loss of pregnancy. Nurses have to evaluate the emotions and feelings of the patients who had undergone a pregnancy loss; and they have to consider the perceptions of the women, with regard to the loss of pregnancy and its consequences.

Many hospital and clinics are now appointing nurses, specifically, in order to address the events surrounding pregnancy loss.
