Rogan (2007) argues that the operating team is ultimately responsible for patient safety in theatre environment and is the usual focus for medico-legal issues when things go wrong. However, NMC (2008) suggest that the practitioners must always promote and safeguard the interests and well-being of the patient and ensure that no action or omission in each area of responsibility is detrimental to the patient. Therefore safe positioning of patients for surgical procedures requires the cooperation of all surgical team members.

The common positions used within the peri-operative areas are supine, prone, lateral, trendelenberg (plus reverse), lithotomy (plus associated positions) and sitting position. While undertaking patient positioning there is a number of related issues like position injuries that need to be considered in order to ensure patient and staff safety. Intraoperative positioning injuries are devastating for both patients and surgical team members. It has been found that no position is entirely safe and positioning depends primarily upon the site of surgery which is often determined on the operating table (Servant and Purkiss 2002).

Position injuries may be transient or long term, to prevent and minimize positioning injuries peri-operative team must consider intervention to promote optimal positioning (Knight and Mahagen, 2004). Ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for every surgical patient is the shared responsibility of everyone on the operating team.According to the World Health Organization (2010), high-quality research and evidence are critical for improving global health and health equity. As stated in the 63rd World Health Assembly, research is central to economic development and global health security and it has to be multidisciplinary nature.

Especially today, that the world is faced with current and emerging health threats such as those posed by chronic diseases and fragile health systems and such occurrences of health care-related complications such as the one discussed in the context of this paper.
