Learning Objectives, Outcomes and Contract      Introduction It is the responsibility of obstetrics nurses to help patients andother health practitioners in giving care to women during childbirth and pregnancy which will sometimes encounter complications and will therefore require special attention. I ,as a clinical specialist within the obstetric-gynaecologic department, I find the need to develop one’s skills to a level where quality delivery can be guaranteed. Course Overview The practicum in this part of the course is part of an RN-MSN program, which will allow me to acquire practical experience in expansion of expertise in the area of dealing with abnormal deliveries. The experience area will be conducted under the gynaecologic obstetric department. I shall focus on the effective management of illness and health in a selected population especially across its lifespan. The practicum is intended to inform the students on how to handle complicated pregnancies and mothers and babies delivered during post-partum period. Applying and integrating theoretical professional knowledge for the advanced nursing practice. The integration and application of advanced nursing theoretical knowledge will be emphasized under the supervising RN. The practicum shall also entail a seminar, which will be examined, discussed and contrasted. Learning Outcomes The results that I expect to be gain from utilizing and evaluating of the environmental and epidemiological data are expected to help in the generation of evidence-based practice strategies, which will promote and develop health in the selected population’s lifespan. I also expect to engage in a health promotion and disease management or risk reduction project that will be aimed at improving the health outcomes of the selected population of mothers with emergency deliveries. I expect to utilize and assess environmental, social, epidemiology-based strategies in order to promote the development of safer practices in emergency deliveries that involve complications among women. I expect to develop knowledge on abnormal deliveries such as vacuum assisted vaginal delivery and acquire skills and knowledge on how to prevent dystocia in women, and also develop skills on how to handle emergency delivery cases involving dystocia, which often causes caesarean emergency pregnancies. I hope to develop an understanding of epiostomy, which is one of the common delivery emergencies encountered as a common complication among women. I expect to demonstrate leadership as a clinical practitioner through partnership and collaboration with other stakeholders within the department of obstetrics and gynaecology. Master’s of Nursing Program Practicum Learning Contract Student Name: ______________________________________________________________ Area of Focus for Practicum: The area of focus for this practicum shall include coverage of emergency pregnancies and their handling. Dysotocia, epiostomy and many other challenges often lead to emergency pregnancies and as such, I find the need for the OB nursing force to develop skills on how to handle these emergencies. Therefore, while generally focusing on the OB department and the effort to aid successful delivery, the practicum shall be specifically aimed at improving the rates of successful emergency deliveries. The process will also concern the development of an urge to learn among us under the practicum through the use of mentorship. Behavioral Objectives for Practicum: I plan to define and understand pregnancy emergencies and their causes as well as define different types of emergencies and how they can be handled. The proficiency should entail a clear understanding of how emergency pregnancies develop and how they should be handled to ensure the safety of the mother. I also expect to understand the operational ethical requirements as well as legal issues with regard to initiating emergency procedures. The knowledge should entail an understanding of the essence of the requirements and their role in facilitating quality care. I expect to develop a cultural understanding on various cultures and the essence of culturally sensitive care in the set up. Delivery is often defined on a cultural basis and therefore, there is a need for practitioners to be aware of the fact that they have to address the cultural need and requirements of the delivering mothers where necessary. I hope to get an understand of the essence of teamwork and how to appropriately relate to the practitioners within the department so as to facilitate the successful undertaking of such emergencies. This should also include the development of an ability to cooperate with other people within the department. Under the practicum period, I should have a personal desire to learn and have a cooperative spirit with all specialists within the department so as to facilitate successful operations within the department. Strategies for Achieving Objectives In order to achieve the set objectives I plan to develop a training program that will educate the students of the program on the potential dangers of emergency pregnancies and how to handle them. The use of mentors in such facilitation would also be an appropriate process. I also plan to initiate a study program that will educate the students under the practicum all legal and ethical requirements that should be observed within the department. Additionally, we under the practicum should learn all the legal and ethical procedures necessary under emergency situations. I also think that cultural sensitivity should be emphasized and the we practicum should be taught about the essence of culture in healthcare, and how cultural sensitivity affects the process of facilitating delivery. Birth is a cultural aspect and the practicum itself should be a practical facilitation to interact with various patients so as to understand their culture and its relation to birth. I believe that the fourth behavioural objective is attainable through placing the each student in a team. The placement of a student in a team within the OB department will help the each student in developing their practical skills that will facilitate appropriate teamwork. The fifth objective is attainable through the development of a personal desire to learn about the practicum’s process and this is best attainable through the pairing of us with practitioners within the department that will oversee their development. Criteria for Evaluation: (List at least one criterion for each objective and strategy) Development of a practical test and a paper and pen test to evaluate students’ understanding of emergencies in the OB department is necessary for assessing the understanding of students’ knowledge on emergencies in the OB department. Test the students on their knowledge on legal and regulatory issues relating to emergency births through a brief test so as to understand the need to educate them on the same. The third objective can be attained by placing students under teams that are culturally mixed and in practicum environments, where they will meet patients from different backgrounds. Thereafter, the students can be assessed on how well they operate under the environment. The third objective can be attained by placing the student under a team where the student will be observed on how well they perform under a team. The students should be placed under a mentor that will assess their personal drive and urge to learn.
