The paper "Contributing to the Nursing Professioт" is a great example of an application essay on nursing. Nursing is a profession of great importance as it plays an essential role in providing basic care to people, especially for those for whom it is more costly to see a doctor for simple ailments. There will always be a need for nurses due to the intricacy and unpredictability of sickness and wounds. The reason for this is because nurses are usually more available than doctors on the spot when such emergencies take place.

I believe that I can contribute a lot to such a vital profession as I have the necessary personality and skills required by it. Moreover, I can create a positive work environment in the hospital I work in and thus increase positive patient outcomes and quality of care. Nursing is not a ‘piece of cake’ because there are certain factors that a nurse’s personality should include, such as being understanding, not panicking during emergencies, patience and a willingness to help others.

I am proud to say that such qualities are a part of my character. I tend to remain calm during urgent circumstances, such as a patient’s sudden lack of breathing. This helps me focus more clearly on the situation in hand and take action at the right time instead of wasting time fretting about the patient’s condition. I am sure such a temperament is essential for a nurse to have. Patience is another quality of mine; sometimes the children of patients or their relatives make a lot of noise and disrupt the tranquility of other patients and hospital staff, causing nurses to ‘lose their cool’ and shout at the kids.

However, my tolerance allows me to convince the kids sweetly to keep silent, thus maintaining the hospital’s reputation and being a good nurse. My set of skills is also a factor that the nursing profession would really benefit from. I have very effective communication skills; I am able to interact with patients easily and can effectively give feedback about the patient’s health to the doctor. I can also explain the patient’s condition to the patient himself/herself very clearly, due to which they are able to understand what I say without any misunderstandings being created.

Furthermore, as I am a good listener as well, patients warm up to me and speak more openly about their medical problems. In this way, I can be informed of certain factors about their health that the patients hesitate from telling the doctor, thus allowing me to provide them with appropriate care. Observing my patients carefully is another ability I excel in; I always keep a check on them to observe for any signs of discomfort or adverse reactions caused by any medicine given to them. I also have good knowledge about all the various medicines and techniques nurses are required to know about, making me a very efficient nurse indeed.

Although it may not seem so important, a professionalism-an element which I have in abundance-is also necessary for the nursing profession. For instance, there are some nurses who have an ego problem-they cannot take instructions or suggestions given by doctors (and patients). However, I am aware that to get respect one has to give it first. Therefore, by extending respect to other health care professionals, I can maintain a positive work environment in a hospital. Some experienced nurses, on seeing a new nurse struggle with a task, do not take the initiative to help that nurse on account of themselves not being helped during their first few years in nursing-they want new nurses to learn the hard way.

This is very disadvantageous to hospitals as new nurses might be discouraged and leave due to such behavior, causing hospitals to have a shortage of nurses. I, on the other hand, am the type who encourages new nurses and helps them out, therefore creating a healthy working environment. In addition, if the care nurses provide is improved, the overall outcome of patients is improved. In brief, I have the necessary temperament and abilities required by a good nurse. I can remain composed during an emergency situation and can bear irritations patiently.

I also have excellent communication skills and can observe my patients for signs of inconvenience efficiently. Providing a beneficial working atmosphere is also something I excel in; I do not let my ego get in the way and think that new nurses should be encouraged and helped out in providing health care. This can also increase overall patient care. Thus, I believe that the nursing profession would benefit a great deal from my contribution to it.
