Ulin. In his abstract he explains, “the volume considers such topics as the city’s history, culture and architecture.” The author, Mary Helen Ponce, writes about life in Southern California during her childhood. As stated in the prologue, this was during the second world war, meaning that Southern California was not the modern city we know today, but more like a city represented in one of our modern Zorro movies; a hot desert, sand everywhere, watering places for the horses as that was the preferred means of transportation, and only few people had the luxury of owning an automobile.
