After having tried the three techniques of stress management (diaphragmatic breathing, progressive relaxation and stretching) I realized that all thetechniques were equally relieving. They are best effective when used in a combination.Under the first technique (diaphragmatic breathing), I felt an enhanced flow of oxygen to my body since I felt very fresh after performing it. Since the technique allows for maximum stretching of the lungs (Seaward & Seaward, 2011) , I could feel that I am relaxed and my blood circulation improved because I didn’t feel lethargic anymore.

It is not surprising, therefore, that this technique is widely used in Yoga and meditation. It is works the best when performed in the morning immediately after waking up since it helps sooth the body and mind. Furthermore, it was simple to perform and did not require any preparations; it can be performed anywhere and takes only a few minutes. It can work miraculously when one is tensed/nervous, as in the case of taking an exam or making a presentation to a large audience. It also works well when one suffers from anxiety; for instance, when one is pressurized because of having to meet too many deadlines at work.

The second technique (progressive relaxation) was more comprehensive in that it incorporated not only mental but also physical muscular exercise. I felt very relieved due to the ‘tensing’ and ‘relaxing’ of my muscles. Although I felt slightly tired towards the completion of this exercise; I noticed that it made my muscle movement more flexible. It increased my physical stamina and helped increase my blood circulation which made me feel fresh. This technique is particularly useful for treating anxiety disorders as well as insomnia and stomach ulcers (Alman & Lambrou, 1992).

Finally, stretching, perhaps, involved the most physical activity. It enhanced my muscle movement and helped me strengthen my muscles and enhance my mental fitness due to increased concentration levels. However, I had to be careful because stretching, if executed incorrectly, can contribute to permanent muscle damage. This activity is particularly useful before performing exercises as it reduces the chances of physical injury (Martin, 2008). It is also useful in increasing the strength of muscles and reducing fatigue.
