Voltaire satirizes optimism per se and humanity’s perverse nature and their abominable social and political institutions in his novel. Candide is a naïve, illegitimate son, and for some time, he believes in his teacher, Pangloss, who claims that the “best of all possible worlds” already exists and it is only waiting for people to enjoy it.
Upon reading “The Cask of Amontillado,” I felt nauseated and sick on the fact that Montresor led Fortunato towards his trap. And through Edgar Allan Poe’s method of storytelling, this short story has effectively driven its readers to feel negatively towards Montresor. It was not clear how Montresor plotted his revenge from Fortunato.
The book is written in a breezy, journalistic style, and starts off with a number of narratives describing journeys the author has made to remote corners of the earth in search of evidence relating to climate change. A dimension which was lacking from the book was that of global markets and the capitalist structure of the world economy. The problem looks like simple incompetence on the part of governments.
Literary issues surround the essence of tragedy as it is played out in Othello and the uniformity between the actions and aims of the characters. Moral issues focus on the depiction of righteousness and wickedness, and social issues emerge from the play’s presentation of justice, violence, and race.
