Our character and behavior should normally be driven by what is morally right or wrong. If somebody does something simply because they have been compelled to do it or simply for material gain, then they have no moral justification for their acts. No moral praise should be directed to anybody who acts for personal gain without regard to other people. If you do something simply because you are driven to make money then your actions do not have any moral ground. We should basically do something because that is the right thing to do and not because we are driven by some ulterior motive.
If I am a student, I should not cheat because cheating is morally wrong but not because the professor says that we should cheat. We should, therefore, be driven and inspired by what is morally right and shun whatever is morally wrong. Relativism is that proposition that one’s convictions and values are best accounted for in terms of their societal and cultural orientation. It is therefore not unusual to find something that is regarded as morally wrong in one culture actually accepted in another culture.
In some societies, it is common for men to share wives in the practice of polyandry while in others that is unheard of. It, therefore, creates a jam as far as Goodman’s arguments go. Goodman is however quick to shed light on such grey areas that may create controversy in moral behavior. The most immediate resolution to such conflicts is basically understanding and tolerance to other people’s cultural orientations.. We need to appreciate and be tolerant or other people’s views and perspectives in life.
Surely, why should someone have the audacity or even the legal right to take away another person’s life? Why should someone rape, maim or murder just for simple material gain? These are basically questions that bring out the concept of morality to much scrutiny and perspective. Our character and behavior should normally be driven by what is morally right or wrong. If somebody does something simply because they have been compelled to do it or simply for material gain, then they have no moral justification for their acts.
