After the fall, Latin continued to exist in both spoken and literary forms. For a long time, it was the main everyday language of the peoples of the former Empire, but, over the years, it was more and more affected by of local dialects. Gradually, in some areas of Europe, languages became so different that it was possible to suggest formation of some new national languages. But the literary form of Latin did not fully disappear, existing in parallel with the new national languages (Farrell, 2001).
