When I looked out my window, I saw the sky had filled with varying shades of dark clouds and the trees were being tossed around in some form of strong wind.  With the next click of the mouse, I discovered my internet service was gone.  With the loss of my internet connection, I couldn’t go to my usual source of weather information to discover just what I should be watching out for. As I mentioned, having a storm brew up that quickly was quite unusual. Stepping outside to take a look, I immediately noticed there had been a drastic drop in temperature.

For people who live in tornado-prone areas, this is a sure danger sign. Taking a closer look at the clouds overhead, I saw how they churned in different directions, one bank moving across the far horizon and another bank, darker and lower, moving crosswise to the first bank. Moving inside, I tried to call my best friend to see if she had heard anything, but there was no dial tone. I forgot that when my internet goes away, so does my phone line. Finally, I turned to the TV, strange how that was my last resort, and was very relieved to see it was still working.

I quickly found the Weather Channel and had just enough time to learn that there were tornado watches in my area before the screen froze in place and the TV went black. Great, tornados, and no help. I went to the window again to watch for danger.Standing just inside my balcony door, I watched the rain get whipped away by the wind before it had a chance to fall down to the ground. I heard the storm winds howling down the corridor that was created between my apartment building and the next one.

In my head, I kept asking myself, ‘does that sound like a freight train rushing toward me?’ That was how I’d always heard tornados described and there was no way I could be prepared for it as the building blocked my vision to that portion of the sky.
