Case study: Psychology homework Case Study: Psychology Homework Introduction Individuals are always faced with a dilemma on how togo about several things. The most common areas include career and family decisions. It is, therefore, vital to consider a number of personal traits, personalities and characters that lean towards a certain side. Values and interests also play a significant role in helping the individual to choose a career that appropriately suits their needs and preferences (Coleman, 2008). In the case of Alex, he has conducted an analysis on MBTI and discovered certain traits about himself. He has two choices between his teaching career and another career as a virologist. The first thing that Alex discovers is that he is slightly an introvert. This means that although he is not that reserved to the extent that he keeps most of the things to himself and would like to stay in highly secluded conditions, he is not comfortable with situations that warrant a lot of interactions with other individuals. In this sense, he requires a job that does not entail a lot of talking, sharing or interaction. He needs a job where he can have a quiet time and concentrate on his essential activities. The job that he should put into consideration should not involve a lot of travelling around or dealing with a large number of people from time to time. In essence, it does not need a lot of activities. The fact that he prefers to think things through as a processing process indicate that he prefers the jobs that require continuous reading, thinking and analysis (Coleman, 2008). Both his career choices which include a high school teacher and viral research will suit his personality traits. They both require a set up where the individual does not have to deal with a large group of individuals. In addition, they do not need a lot of interaction and extensive talking periods. In addition, they offer an opportunity to perform the required tasks while the individual is stationed at a particular time. With this, there is no greater chance of frequent movements from one place top the other. There is a lot of reading, thinking, analysis and sharing involved in the career choices made by Alex. In this case, it brings about the continuous process where the primary information gained is extended and improved to the point where it can be shared by other people. Since he majors in biology, the two jobs will give him the opportunity to perform a wide range of practical tests that most of the time offers the chance for him to have some few moments alone. At such moments, he gets the opportunity to reflect over several aspects. They also give him the chance to look at things in a broader perspective and build on relationships to make a meaningful sense of knowledge. With each new result from his research and activities, he will be able to get the new experiences that he is so passionate about (Salovey, Mayer & Caluso, 2004). Accordingly, the Holland code of Alex is INFP. It is primarily concerned with a character that it introversive, intuitive, has feelings and is perceptive about a number of elements. It is an indication that the kind of workforce required by Alex is both silent and challenging. It should have minimum individuals to interact and share with. In addition, there are also some factors that make the two careers suitable for him. The first one is the fact that he enjoys field activities. They will give him plenty of time to perform other activities besides professional duties. Moreover, the fact that he has a fiancée with whom he intends to get married after he completes his undergraduate course is an indication that he should look for a job that gives ample family time. At the time that he completes his undergraduate studies, there will be a need to be around his family for most of the time (Coleman, 2008). In this respect, the most appropriate career path for Alex is the one that is related to the performance of viral research. As a virologist, he has many things to learn in the future. This area of study can never be fully exhausted. With research, there is a lot of time to spare for family as well as other activities that one likes to take part in. In addition, the environment is not structured and gives a lot of freedom for creativity. Moreover, it provides room for the researcher to set their own goals and target lines. The most important thing is that the results are not only shared by others in the effort to build relationships based on knowledge, but they can also be passed to others to prevent the spread of viral diseases. It is possible to identify her strengths through a number of ways. In the case of Jane, it is important that she performs a proper analysis on her personality traits, values and interest. As such as much as her family should help her to choose the appropriate career to pursue, much of the decision should be made by her. It is important to be involved in a course that she is passionate about. In this case, while her family should take her through the different careers that properly suit her, she should select the one that excites her most and fulfills most of her needs (Salovey, Mayer & Caluso, 2004). Some of the essential factors to consider include her likes and dislikes. These will dictate the kind of career opportunity that is best for her to work in. For instance, she should consider what she prefers, the kind of ideas that thrill her, the nature of relationships she desires in relation to the sharing of knowledge, her thoughts about new experiences and the structure of the working environment that suits her most. With this, she should ask a number of questions in relation to this. The best answer should be provided by her preferred career choice. Additionally, she should also consider her future plans. These include the need to start a family. In this case, she should make an option based on the amount of free time that she is likely to get. Besides, she should also consider the other types of activities that she would be interested in. Therefore, she should look back into her past and identify one career that is reflected in her activities and thoughts. Ultimately, she should understand that one of the courses that she has dismissed during the initial counseling sessions is supposed to be one of her preferred choices (Salovey, Mayer & Caluso, 2004). If someone approached me and highlighted that they would prefer ASE, then the most appropriate careers for them would include nursing and other medical related courses, human resource services to customer related services. This is mainly because they are associated with the need to deal with different human beings from time to time. In addition, there is a need for compassion and the need to build relations frequently. For this reason, they need an understanding of human behavior. From these careers, the members of this profession also have the opportunity to get new experiences within a structured organization. There is a specific way that is required to deal uniquely with each situation (Coleman, 2008). Multitasking has both its positive and negative aspects. While it helps the individual to perform more tasks than is possible while performing each of the tasks at a go, it is one form of distraction. With multitasking, one is able to use minimal time to perform a number of activities. One disadvantage with the idea is that the actions cannot be performed at the same level as they would if each of them is performed at a time. The level of concentration would be divided. As such, it is a function that leads to saving time while at the same time; tasks are performed below the expected quality. Therefore, it is not possible to learn efficiently and effectively while performing other tasks. Emotional intelligence involves the ability to monitor personal emotions and other people’s emotions. As such, it is made up of certain features and characteristics. An emotionally intelligent individual is decisive, analytical and judgmental. As such, in a college set up, emotional intelligence helps the individual to know how to behave and what to think while interacting with other students and teachers.
