In the 1950s, intrinsic cardiac ganglia were found primarily over the posterior surfaces of the atria and atrio-ventricular groove (Armour, Murphy, Yuan, MacDonald, & Hopkins, 1997). From then until now, the studies have evolved into defining their roles in heart function, the activities of the cardiac innervations at different conditions, the molecular mechanisms of their function, the diseases they are implicated in, and the effects of these discoveries in the management of cardiac diseases.
