“Very few early adolescents (both boys and girls) are sexually active. (0.6% of 10-year-olds, 1.1% of 11-year-olds and 2.4% of 12-year-olds.) The incidence of pregnancy among girls aged 12 or younger is minuscule. However adolescence is a time of rapid change, sexual activity is more common among older teens, including one-third (33%) of those aged 16, nearly half are sexually active, (48%) of those aged 17, 61% to, 71% are 18- and 19-year-old, respectively.” (Lawrence & Jesse, 2013) This is a trend which has been known for quite a number of decades now.
