Topic: HIT-healthcare Inserts His/Her Inserts Grade Inserts 04 October, 2008 HIT 120 – Chapter one Application Exercise Explore the AHIMA Website AHIMA is the premier association of health information management (HIM) professionals. Founded in 1928 to improve the quality of medical records, AHIMA is committed to advancing the HIM profession in an increasingly electronic and global environment through leadership in advocacy, education, certification, and lifelong learning. AHIMAs 52,000 members are dedicated to the effective management of personal health information needed to deliver quality healthcare to the public. 1. Qualifications and process for coding credentials There are three steps for qualifications and process for coding credentials. They are: Eligibility – Students must have some prerequisites to apply for any HIM programs. The prerequisites are: HTHS 1101 Medical Terminology and HTHS 1110 Biomedical Core I. These courses must be completed with a grade "C" or better to be eligible to apply. Student must complete the GAP Analysis mentioned in CODING EDUCATION PROGRAM APPROVAL MANUAL. Then they submit via email to the Coordinator/Education and Accreditation Benjamin Reed for consideration at benjamin.reed@ahima.org and print out a hard copy with the attachment of check for $200.00 and send to Benjamin Reed at AHIMA. Once the check is processed, the GAP will be distributed to the peer review team. Application – GAP analysis will be reviewed to find out the essential compliance with the Model Curriculum and Criteria and the applicant will be notified of the results of the review Recognition – The ACCP committee will review the CEPA manual through a peer review process. A vote will be taken and the applicant notified of the committee’s decision. If approved, a certificate of approval will be mailed to the program. 2. Qualifications and process for specialty certifications To ensure that its members meet professional standards of excellence, AHIMA issues credentials in health information management, coding, and healthcare privacy and security. Members earn credentials through a combination of education and experience, and finally performance on national certification exams. AHIMA members must maintain their credentials through rigorous continuing education requirements. 3. Qualifications and process for RHIT and RHIA Qualifications and process for RHIT and RHIA are same. The academic qualifications of each candidate will be verified before a candidate is deemed eligible to take the examination. All first-time applicants must submit an official transcript from their college or university. AHIMA’s Council on Certification reserves the right to verify the information supplied by, or on behalf of, a candidate. If selected for an audit, the candidate may be asked to submit additional documentation supporting eligibility. Taking certification examinations is voluntary. AHIMA strictly adheres to the eligibility requirements for certification. It is the candidate’s responsibility to comply with all procedures and requirements in order to establish eligibility for the examination. Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements: • Successfully complete the academic requirements, at the associate’s degree level, of a health information management (HIM) program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM)* • Graduate from an HIM program approved by a foreign association with which AHIMA has a reciprocity agreement. 4. Qualifications and process for Fellow The AHIMA Fellowship Program is a level of earned recognition for AHIMA members who made significant and sustained contributions to the advancement of the Health Information Management (HIM). Fellowship is open to any individual who is a regular, honorary, or senior member of AHIMA, and who meets the following eligibility requirements: Minimum of 10 years full-time professional experience in HIM or related field. Minimum of 10 years continuous AHIMA membership at time of application. Minimum of masters degree. Evidence of sustained and substantial professional achievement that demonstrates professional growth and use of innovative and creative solutions. Once conferred, the fellow status is lifetime recognition, subject to continuing AHIMA membership and compliance with the AHIMA Code of Ethics. 5. AHIMA volunteer structure Volunteer service as an officer, director, committee or council chair or member, task force chair or member, special project director, CoP Facilitator, or representative of the HIM field at government hearings for AHIMA or other national healthcare associations 6. AHIMA Membership categories There are four categories of AHIMA membership. They are- 1. Active 2. Student 3. New Graduate 4. Senior 7. Student member and new professional Students who do not have an AHIMA credential and have not previously been Active members of AHIMA are eligible to apply for student membership. Any currently enrolled student that satisfies one of these conditions will qualify to join AHIMA at the discounted student membership rate of $35 per year. In recognition of service to the profession, current AHIMA members 65 and over are eligible for senior member type. AHIMA sponsors two weeks each year to recognize the achievements of healthcare professionals, Health Information Privacy & Security Week in April and Health Information and Technology (HI&T) Week in November. 8. New code of ethics The Professional Code of Ethics of the American Health Information Management Association is essential in guiding the decision-making process. The House of Delegates passed the first Code of Ethics for the Practice of Medical Record Science. A cost of living dues increase, revised Code of Ethics, simplified standards for maintenance of credentials, and recognition of AHIMA as an independent accrediting body are just some of the issues delegates will discuss at this years annual meeting. 20 CCS/CCS-P Certification Appendix C--AHIMAs Code of Ethics Preamble This Code of Ethics sets forth ethical principles for the health information management (HIM) profession. Members of this profession are responsible for maintaining and promoting ethical practices. 9. Allied Health Reinvestment Act The Allied Health Reinvestment Act is designed to establish, reauthorize and reinvigorate allied health education programs under Title VII of the Public Health Services Act. HR 4016 is the result of efforts by AHIMA and a number of other organizations to address the shortage of qualified HIM and other allied health professionals and educators in the industry. Currently, academic programs need to be enhanced and funded, and students need to be recruited and supported, in order to meet the demands of managing healthcare data in an electronic environment. Failure to address such workforce issues for HIM and other allied health professions will have a negative impact on the delivery of healthcare in future years. 10. AHIMA strategic initiatives, especially E-HIM In 2003, the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) convened an interdisciplinary panel of experts to craft a vision for electronic health information management (e-HIM): Electronic health information management is the body of knowledge and practice that assures the availability of health information to facilitate real-time healthcare delivery and critical health-related decision making for multiple purposes across diverse organizations, settings, and disciplines. 11. Current House of Delegate Issues The AHIMA House of Delegates supports the recommendation of the Council on Accreditation and the Board of Directors to seek independent recognition by CHEA and will work hand in hand with the Council in the coming months to effect the changes to the bylaws and Standards that will be required to conform to CHEA’s standards of recognition. 12. FORE Triumph Awards The FORE Triumph Awards are national awards designed to recognize those special individuals who have made a difference in the HIM profession. This awards program was developed as part of the Foundation of Research and Educations (FOREs) campaign to forecast future trends in HIM, envision HIM roles in the future, and focus on emerging HIM knowledge and skills. The FORE Triumph Awards honor leadership in the HIM field, reward contributions that build our knowledge base, recognize excellence in preparing future HIM professionals, and encourage fresh talent and new leadership. 13. ILHIMA ILHIMA is an affiliate of the AHIMA, the premier association of health information management (HIM) professional. The Illinois Health Information Management Association (ILHIMA) was awarded first place in the Legislative and Regulatory Advocacy category of the second annual American Health Information Management Association’s (AHIMA) Core Service Achievement Awards. The awards recognize excellence in the AHIMA’s Component State Association’s (CSA) efforts, as well as provide all of AHIMA’s 52 CSAs with information and ideas that can be applied to their own state. ILHIMA was recognized for its progressive efforts in affecting public policy surrounding the health information management (HIM) profession. AHIMA’s 50,000 members are dedicated to the effective management of personal health information needed to deliver quality healthcare to the public. The immediate ability to disseminate, exchange, and share information is a powerful tool in keeping pace with changes in the HIM field. Time and again, CoP users are turning to one another online for support, ideas, and new information. 17. MyPHR.com Keeping one’s own personal health record (PHR) allows him to provide doctors with valuable information that can help improve the quality of care he receives. A PHR can help reduce or eliminate duplicate tests and allow one to receive faster, safer treatment and care in an emergency. In short, a PHR helps one play a more active role in his and his loved ones’ healthcare. 18. IFHRO IFHRO is a non-profit organization affiliated with the World Health Organization (WHO) as a non-governmental organization (NGO). The Federation sends representatives to WHO meetings and works closely with WHO on specific projects of particular concern or interest to WHO in the field of health records and information systems. IFHRO also has a partnership with the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA), which provides opportunities for interested professionals to share information through newsletters and to participation in meetings dedicated to healthcare informatics. The partnership also provides an opportunity for IFHRO and IMIA to work together to promote health informatics and health records throughout the world. 19. AHMA Journal Now more than ever, the Journal of AHIMA is a source for on-the-job solutions. Delivering updated news covering health information management (HIM), the Journal gives practical guidance from HIM field experts on new regulations and up-to-date policies and procedures. 20. E-Alert Advantage E-Alerts are weekly e-mail newsletters that deliver brief news summaries on important industry, AHIMA, and government news. The focus is on news members can use and apply immediately to their job. E-Alert is currently delivered to 42,000 members with e-mail addresses, and the number increases each week. A single sponsorship is available for each issue of E-Alert. The sponsor is acknowledged with a statement and link at the top of each issue. 21.
