Topic: Children with Special Learning Needs Children with Special Learning Needs There are several debates concerning theissue of engaging children with disabilities in the mainstream educational system. Some scholars believe that it is not right, as they cannot get the attention and all the facilities they require in this system. What differs is how we handle them and the impact it has on their lives. Some of the scholars who are not in support of children with disabilities being included in the mainstream system are Kauffman, McGee and Brightman (2004).

On the other hand, Giangreco is in full support of this step and advocates for it and provides a rather convincing argument about the same in his article. In my opinion, I believe Giagreco’s argument makes more sense and the same ideology should be adopted in our society to words providing our disabled children an environment where they do not feel as if they are isolated.According to Giangreco, children with special needs should be included in mainstream classrooms. This is right since these students are entitled to supplemental support.

This enables them pursue individually determined learning outcomes. The curriculum addresses the needs of each student in every general education setting regardless of their abilities or disabilities. This can be achieved through modification of the curriculum. Some of the students with disabilities may not require individualized content while those with severe disabilities may require a modification in both programs and support accommodation to succeed in a mainstream class (Giangreco 2007).

This will ensure that these students have an equal chance of learning and excelling like the rest of the children who have no disabilities.Kauffman, McGee and Brightman (2004), feel that placing all students in regular classes regardless of their abilities has worsened the tendency to view disability as something that only exists in people’s minds. This is wrong since Giangreco’s proposal for modifying the curriculum shows that the students with disabilities would be well-taken care for in this environment.

They would receive great care and attention depending on the severity of their disability (Giangreco 2007). If anything, idea of extending student participation would enable them have a chance to learn and show other students that a student with disabilities is not overly dependent on support.ReferenceGiangreco, M. F. (2007). Extending Inclusive Opportunities. Educational Leadership, 64(5), 34-37.Kauffman, J. M., McGee, K., & Brigham, M. (2004). Enabling or disabling? Observations on changes in special education.
