CULTURAL AND ETHICAL IMPLICATIONS OF NATURAL VERSUS MEDICAL REMEDIES FOR SLEEP Introduction Getting enough sleep duringthe night is of utmost importance in a person’s life. This is crucial as it helps one maintain a healthy life with most fatigue reduced whilst one is asleep. However, different people have trouble in soothing their bodies to sleep, a problem blamed on different causatives. Sleep loss can be attributed to different factors that fuel it, such as having difficulty in breathing while sleeping among other things.

The following is a discussion on alternate nostril breathing as a way of inducing sleep and its scientific perspective. In addition, the paper will deduce more on the cultural and ethical perspective of natural versus medical remedies for sleep. Summary of Results Following a practical research on the effects of alternate nostril breathing as an inducer of sleep, I found out that it took the same period for me to fall asleep in both the normal method and the alternating nostril breathing method.

However, from the tabulated results it is vivid that other factors other than the method applied to induce sleep contributed to the lack of sleep.Cultural and Ethical Implications Use of alternate nostril breathing is a pure, natural means through which one can overcome insomnia. From a cultural and ethical perspective, many would be comfortable in using it as a means of calming their nerves and inducing sleep (Larue, 2011). However, it faces a challenge from medical remedies such as pills that people take to induce sleep.

Being natural and effective forms the stronghold of using alternate nostril breathing as an inducer of sleep. On the other hand, it has a weakness; it may not work for some people, who ought to seek medical support. Thus, the medical way of inducing sleep has an upper hand on comparison to alternate nostril breathing. This is because its chances of working are higher than the ones of alternate nostril breathing. In addition, from a scientific perspective, many feel it is impossible to make explanations as to how the physical effects they have on an individual.

Moreover, from a scientific view, they believe that such natural methods only become effective because of the effect on the psychology of an individual. Despite the efficiency, the medical methods have addictive effects such that one will always require the sleeping aid before sleeping (Marks, 2011). On a cultural platform, people from the west seem to lean more on scientific methods to induce sleep. On the other hand, people originating from the east seem to believe in natural methods such as yoga activities.

The people from the east are highly dependent on their culture to acquire various things such as healing, even from insomnia (Nabacu Eastern Medicine Centers, 2010). Use of pills to induce sleep forms one of the most used scientific methods. One can apply scientific methods at all stages of insomnia, from mild to moderate and chronic stages.
