The Process of Effective Communication: A Daily Need Full Communication is probably one of the most embraced process used everyday in an individual’s life whether young or old, male or female, educated or not and regardless of race as well. It is not only verbal but also comes in the form of body or written languages. On the average, man sends 100 to 300 messages a day (The University of Maine Cooperative Extension). However, these messages so many times are not received as accurately as the sender meant to express so that there now exists communication problems.

It is then this paper’s objective to look at how one could improve his communication skills to get all the worth of his attempts to let another person understand his point of view. In understanding the communication process, one needs to see how it works by looking at the elements involved. First, there is the sender whose performance usually is affected by his communication skills like speaking, listening, writing, reading, non-verbal communication like facial expressions, thinking and reasoning (foundationcoalition.org). Effectively bringing across the message to the receiver is usually a difficult task especially when the sender and receiver are of different cultures whose interpretation of words and actions may differ.

In addition, attitudes affecting a person’s delivery of message usually reflected through non-verbal means can give other meanings and make the message be misconstrued, making the process more difficult. Thus, it is important for a listener to consider not only the speaker’s ability or inability to express himself rather understand as well his beliefs, education and cultural background. The message is the second element in the process comprised of the content, context and treatment. Content is the idea the speaker or sender is trying to relay to the listener or receiver.

Context is the words used in expressing the idea and treatment is the arrangement of words or sentences used to convey the message. High-falutin’ words then, is not the remedy to convincing people to listen to a speaker but it is the understandable arrangement of words that will make sense and meaning to the listener. The channel is another element that needs to be taken into consideration when deciding how one should effectively express his message. The sensory channels involve the sense of sight, touch, hearing, smell and taste which according to studies, make communications more effective when two or more of which are involved (foundationcoalition.org). With this information, it could be said that face to face interaction could be the most effective method of expressing one’s self.

Institutional channels are the methods one uses to convey messages like verbal or written communications and the use of electronic media. The last element of the process is the receiver who, like the sender should use effectively his communication skills to get in line with the thoughts and ideas of the speaker. However, most of the efforts have to come from the sender because it is he who has a message to relay and when his thoughts are effectively expressed, it should not be a person’s goal to let the listener believe everything he said or agree with his ideas rather that his message is clearly presented the receiver can make a clear visual picture of it in his mind.

So difficult, yet so important is effective communication. Still, it is a necessity man has to face everyday so, it becomes a vital measure for one to study how to improve his communication skills.ReferencesThe University of Maine Cooperative Extension.
