Week 10 (61) The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP) is the national credentialing body for several typesof counseling programs including Masters and doctoral degreed programs regardless of the "type" of counseling program. They are the program that creates the credentialing for these programs which means they have specific standards that they must meet (CACREP Website). Another part of their mission is to make sure that counselors have professional competence in what they do and they want to advance the profession.
The National Board for Certified Counselors is the body that certifies individual counselors according to certain standards. This is an additional certification that an individual counselor can add to their state licensure requirement. Some people think that this is all they need to do for state certification but this is not the same as state licensure requirements although many may be similar.
The relationship of these two
Counselors can elect to be certified by the NBCC and it can be added once they have state licensure. CACREP does not certify individual counselors but it does certify the programs that counseling students need to take when going through their training. CACREP is not required of every counseling program though many states have these programs. Both programs have specific standards and codes of ethics that their members must abide by in order to continue to be a part of their programs.

...WK11 (61) Project A Day in the Life of a Mental Health Counselor The mental health counselor that I interviewed seemed to really love his job. He said that his day starts out with getting to the office about 7:00 a.m. His first client is usually around 8:00 a.m. or 8:30 a.m. and he likes to take time in the morning to relax and get ready for his first session. Since he works with sex offenders he usually will only see 6-8 clients on an average day. This does not always mean that he will talk to his client in the office but he may need to go to the jail or prison in order to talk with his client. He spaces his clients so that he has the time to reflect on each one and write notes about them. This is an activity that is...
