SITUATION A: You have been notified that there is a case before City Council to approve a new nightclub in your neighborhood. The owners of the proposed nightclub have operated several other clubs in your city. They have a reputation for being insensitive to those who live nearby in the community.
QUESTION 1: What restrictions would you recommend the city require the new nightclub to meet before granting approval? Should hearing protection be worn by employees?
Before this night club to approve they should pass a permit to operate in certain conditions. First, they should design their club with acoustics. They have to have a design that can absorb the noise the nightclub can cause. This is to avoid disturbance in the neighborhood. The management also should let their employees wear protection from noise to avoid hearing defects. Next, they should have specific noise peak hours.
Just like in the City of Bloomington, they imposed rules about noise control to take care of the health and welfare of the citizenry around its city. Parties to all amplified music are going to undergo the noise control policy. If ever one breaks the policy will be subject to a 50-dollar fine or a charge of disorderly conduct.SITUATION B: Radon gas emits Alpha particles which may cause lung cancer if inhaled by an individual. Several friends of yours are purchasing a new home in an area where you understand that radon gas may be common.
QUESTION 2: What advice would you give to your friends who are considering purchasing a new home in an area where radon gas levels may be high?
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas produced by the radioactive decay of the element radium. It usually enters a house or building through openings in the ground, and its presence increases the risk of lung cancer. I’ll advise my friend to conduct a radon test in the place where they will purchase a new home. This procedure will enable them to be informed of the level of abundance of radon in the place.
The following represents our opinion, based on our understanding of the radon issue from several sources (Martin, 1995).
One of the friends suggests that inexpensive tests can be performed and most problems can be remediated. Do you agree?
Basing on the information above about the level of presence of radon, I will not take the risk. I will still run tests that will give me the confirmation how worst will it takes. It will not matter to me the cost of the test so long that I will be safe from the complications it might cost me. I will still advice my friend not to purchase a new home with radon exposure.
