To motivate his staff, Steve Jenkins has found that candy can be an appealing incentive. In terms of resolving conflicts, the best way to come to a conclusion is to listen and consider what the other side has to say. Mr. Jenkins is the type of leader who encourages active participation instead of telling his employees what to do. Trust plays an important role in this type of relationship, but it has to go both ways. This view of his also translates into education—teachers and students should both be empowered to express their views, and this results in a better education experience for everyone involved.

In terms of the positive aspects of current campus culture and climate, Steve Jenkins is of the opinion that respect, experience, and diversity are of greatest value. Public education can still be improved though; Mr. Jenkins would remove big tests if he was given a chance to improve the education system. This is because these tests actually do not force students to memorize concepts over the long term because all that is required is a short term result. All aspects of school life are evaluated regularly so that the system remains of a high quality.

Two books that Mr. Jenkins would recommend to anyone who is looking for further professional development in leadership is ASCD – Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) – Grades 6-12. One important piece of advice that Steve Jenkins would give is to read as much as you can, become a good listener, and don’t be afraid to ask as many questions as you wish.
