Thematic Analysis The analysis on the text seeks to give a of how the themes of commercialization, marriage, friendship and love have been developed in the texts and movies. Commercialization The movie, Zui Ai, reflects the back 90s years of the rural China. The theme that most suits the movie is commercialization. Commercialization is defined as the process of introducing a new product or method of production into the market. Inhabitants of the rural China are hit by a deadly disease; one that required transfusion of blood to its victims. As a result, Lao Zhuzhu sees an opportunity to sell blood to the people but the blood is contaminated with HIV virus. In the ordinary, such a business at such a time would be commendable, but Lao’s quest for quick money only resulted in the creation of more problems in the community as many people got infected with HIV virus. Among the victims are QinQin and Zhou Deyi, who even after being infected, end up marrying one another (Zui Ai). Being the major theme of the text, commercialization in this context has been assigned a number of undeserving characteristics. That it doesn’t matter how one gets to earn money so long as he/she earns it. Lao Zhuzhu, a major character in this theme, makes money at the expense of infecting people with HIV virus. As in the rules of marketing, any product launch in the market would require testing phase that seeks to establish its effect in the market; a step deliberately ignored by Lao Zhuzhu resulting to the infection of many people in the rural community. The theme of commercialization is also evident in the noble Qing ni yuan liang wo. Chen Ruoxi, a reporter, records Yelanqiu on the same day she is diagnosed with leukemia. This makes situation to escalate. In the text, a situation can be converted to cash even if it means creating more problems for another person. This served as one of the contributing factors that resulted in the emotional stress of Yelanqiu thereby committing suicide. Marriage In the days of the movie Qing ni yuan liang wo, and probably the present days, marriage seemed to suffer quite a number of challenges; infidelity being one of them. Marriage is considered as a right of passage that any human should undertake. Ordinarily, different people marry for different reasons, whether the concept of love is attached to it or not. In this context, the concept of marriage has been entangled within many other activities and has come out not as an independent theme, but as a collective theme. Other themes are embedded in the theme of marriage to help signify the various aspects of marriage that make it what it is. Such themes are like the one for love. QinQin and Zhou Deyi get infected with HIV virus, not as a result of their own negligence, but as a result of dirty blood transfusion. It is very obvious that they are both going to die. Despite that, they both decide to marry one another (Zui Ai). In this context, it is hard to say why they had to marry. However, it would be easier to assign the concept of love in this context. Many at times, love creates the basis for marriage and one that takes place under such circumstances can most likely qualify to be as a result of love. Love is not a theme, but a situation explaining the theme of marriage. Even though marriages undergo some challenges, the manners in which those challenges are handled are important to keep it going and save other people. Marriage, in an indirect manner, caused the death of Yelanqiu, the business woman. Shenshu’s wife Mo Xiaoyu, suspects that her husband is having an affair with Yelanqiu. This suspicion was indeed true, but it cost Yelanqiu her life since Mo Xiaoyu decided to leak the whole story to Ruoxi, who is a reporter. As time elapses, Yelaniqiu finds a friend in Ruoxi’s boyfriend and that’s cretes more trouble for her creating media attention that finally causes her to commit suicide (Qing ni yuan liang wo) Friendship More often than not, friendship does not pull through given certain circumstances. A first encounter at school saw An Sheng’ and Qi Yue develop a friendship relationship; one which has been characteristically assigned amazing features. At times, friends tend to fill the by other things. In the explanation of this theme in the text, two case scenarios has been used; Qi yue coming from a rich family but always alone and An Sheng’ coming from a middle class family unit and her mother not being around most of the time. This creates an opportunity to develop close friendship (qi yue he an sheng) The value of this friendship is exhibited in the way the two ladies handles themselves in the face of love. Most times, Where love becomes the center of interest between two people, friendship usually loses its place, but this was not so in the case of An Sheng’ and Qi Yue. Qi Yue meets a perfect guy, Jia Ming. She introduces her to her only friend An Sheng who apparently also falls in love with him.Qi Yue discovers of the relationship her friend is having with her boyfriend and she decides to travel across the country. As she does this, despite the feeling of betray that she might have felt, she still considered An Sheng a friend and kept on contacting her. Eventually, she does what many people in the ordinary life cannot do; accepting to let go of Jia Ming even under the circumstance that she was bearing his child. Unfortunately, Qi Yue passes on after her delivery of the baby and An Sheng’ takes care of her friend’s baby as her own (qi yue he an sheng). In explaining the theme of friendship in this context, it has been assigned quality features that are all inclusive of forgiveness, understanding and mutual consent. Friendship has come out as a gift that continues giving and it is beneficial in the long run. Under ordinary circumstances, a situation such as this would attract enmity between An Sheng’ and Qi Yue. Qi Yue plays a major role in explaining the extent of friendship (qi yue he an sheng). She plays the role of the offended in this context, but she does not act as if she is offended. We see a character that does not cling on Jia Ming because she bears his child. She rather opts out and approve the relationship between Jia Ming and her best friend. We also see the concept of friendship through An Sheng’s acceptance to take care of the baby. Love Love has always been the motive behind certain deeds; both good and bad. Many people are able to do questionable deeds just to secure their love. As for Song Qi, this was the case. We meet a character who killed her friend just for love. Liu Dong loves Song Qi but he goes ahead and has a relationship with his girlfriend’s friend Xiaoxi; an affair that got her killed. She buries any evidence that can incriminate her and the police do not find anything. Eventually, she kills a police officer but again no evidence can place her at the scene of crime. At the end of it all, she gets over the guy and move on to another relationship with another guy (er ci bao Guang). All this set of crimes can be attributed to the concept of love. She killed her friend because she wanted to secure her love for Liu Dong though that was not so successful as she followed with a series of other crimes, not for love this time round, but to cover up her crimes of passion (er ci bao Guang). In conclusion, the theme of marriage and love are two different themes, but in some circumstances, love has been used not as a theme but as an enhancing term that builds the theme of marriage. Most of the characters used in the text have helped bring out the theme. That is by description of the characters for example the question of infidelity has built theme of marriage.
