Emblems—In the United Kingdom, the erect forefinger and middle symbolizes the word “victory.” 2. Illustrators—Putting both hands wide apart symbolizes something big and huge such as distance. 3. Affective Displays—Surprise is often expressed by raised eyebrows, eyes wide open, and mouth open. 4. Voice Quality—Higher pitched voice is often used by women when they are angry. Raising one’s voice often expresses anger. 3. Vocalization—Speeches delivered at a faster rate are often interpreted to have come from a more competent speaker. Non-Verbal Rituals 1. Ritual 1—In the Philippines, kissing the forehead of elders symbolizes respect. This has become a custom and is passed even to the modern generation. 2. Between a Small Group—Eye to eye contact often indicates who is being referred to in a conversation. Interaction Territory—When groups of teenagers are hanging out in the park, I avoid disturbing them by avoiding to pass through their circle. Instead, I choose to stay as far as possible because the space is exclusive for their interaction and I am an outsider. Proxemics 1. Intimate Space—For me, intimate space ranges from 18 inches and below which is the distance when I interact with close friends and family members. 2. Social Space—I maintain social distance with my classmates and my colleagues at work. This is often from four feet to twelve feet. 3. Personal Space—I characterize personal space as one where I confine casual and personal conversations with friends and classmates. 4. Public Space—When speaking in public, public space is utilized. This is when I am 12 feet apart or more from my intended audience and my speech is made audible through the use of devices like microphone. Physical Environment 1. You at work—At work, I maintain professionalism by dressing modestly and using words which are appropriate to the work environment. I am extremely respectful to my superior and often keep relationships just civil and not intimate. 2. You at home—Home is where I can really be myself. I dress the way I want. I can joke around with my siblings and parents. I am generally carefree and confident about myself and the people around me. 3. You at school—At school, I am constrained by the rules and regulations of the institutions. I wear uniforms and show respect to my teachers and classmates. However, when I am outside the classroom and is hanging out with my friends, I tend to be more talkative and relaxed. 4. You while shopping—During shopping, my behavior really relies on who I am interacting to. When with friends, I am bubbly and tries to get their opinion about the purchases that I make.
