Relevant management theory Principles of Scientific Management by Frederick Winslow Taylor (1856-1915) According to Taylor (1911), scientific management is the best rested on the manager's superior responsibility and ability to apply systematic knowledge to the organizational work setting. Taylor developed four principles of scientific management: 1. The management should develop a scientific management methodology 2. Managers should assume the responsibility for selecting, training and developing the workers 3. Management should cooperate with subordinates to ensure the proper application of the scientific management method 4. Managers should become involved with the work of their employees as much as possible Scientific management was made up of a system of interacting with employees, providing incentives to workers through the piece rate system and improving work methods. As a manager, I have assumed the responsibility for training, selecting and developing the workers. I also cooperate with my subordinates to see to it that that there is proper application of scientific management theory. Also as manager, I get involved with the work of my employees as much as possible. Action plan for the development of management skills In order to develop the management skills that I have, there are several things that I need to do which include: Getting to Know My Team I will make every possible effort to reach out personally to all those who report to me. Ill schedule a one on one meeting so as to get an idea of what my team perceives to be the company’s or department’s strengths and weaknesses and comply this ideas for solutions Practice Listening When am in the management position, everyone talks to me. My employees come to me with gripes and ideas. My boss tells me what he wants and I talk with my colleagues about their issues. The biggest gift I can give to them and especially my employees is the gift of being there. I need to listen to them in the moment i.e. to focus totally on the speaker Manage by walking around This means getting out of the cage and visiting, ask questions, glad- hand, check the work, say happy birthday etc. this may be a bit difficult task since the office tends to be an embracing cocoon. However, being visible to my employees, they we see me as a part of the group instead of a hobo that just remains in the office. Moreover, I will be able to develop a feeling for what is going on and be able to respond abruptly. This will sharpen my skills, define my style and provide me with cutting edge materials for decision making. Delegation One of the important management skills of a good manager is delegation. When one does a task completely on their own, they have control over the outcome completely. However, by not delegating, I will be doing my employees and myself a disservice. Being a manager means applying more critical thinking skills and strategic skills to the work of the department. Delegating will help me reduce the amount of tactical work that needs to be done ad in turn focus on other more important issues. The main objective of this is to help identify which of the tasks can be left for the staff. Read More
