The Role of Employee Identification Introduction Every professional individual is associated with a particular job role, which requires him to do a particular set of activities that lead eventually leads to organizational success. The job role assigned for a particular individual is mostly dependent on his skill set, knowledge base and level of expertise (Noe et al 99-129). The concept of right job for the right person highlights the importance of the proper job allocation (Kotler and Keller 70-72). The set of tasks, duties and responsibilities (TDR) that is assigned to a particular individual needs to be in line with his knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA). This paper is focused on the TDR and KSA of the position of General Manager of KFC restaurant. It also includes KSA self assessment and KSA improvement plan. List of TDR The TDR listed on the website of KFC has been discussed in this section in details. The general manager is given the responsibility to run a particular KFC restaurant outlet where he assumes the roles and responsibilities to achieve the certain predefined objectives that lead to organizational success. The TDR are as follows. Running the restaurant by strictly adhering to the company’s policies and business regulations, that also includes managing and directing the individual activities of the employees, ensuring operational efficiency and maximizing profit. Effectively implement the One-System OH&S program to ensure that all the operational activities are progressing in desired direction. Provide proper training for the employees to enhance their skills and equip them with proper resources that enable them to perform their tasks with safety. Take the responsibility of safety for the customers, visitor, contractors, etc, when they are on the property. To ensure that the operational activities follow CHAMP standards and the employees are dedicated to offer services that exceed customer’s expectations of hospitality, efficiency, product quality, maintenance and speed of response. Implement proper control mechanisms to ensure safety of the employees and financial capital of the company. Adhere to the company’s system for proper recruitment of staffs and employees and coordinate with the HR policies of the firm. Keep all the operational activities within budget and ensure that the right staffs with the right skills are appointed to the right tasks. Effectively maintain performance monitoring and provide guidance and training whenever required. At the same time ensure that the performance standard is maintained. The general manager needs maintain a good communication with the Area Manager and keep his informed about any competitive activity in the vicinity that might affect the business of the KFC restaurant. He further needs to be informed about any concerns regarding employees, customer relations, inspections, etc (U+KFC, “Position Description”). List of KSA Every employee needs to have a particular set of KSA that makes his suitable for the allocated job roles. These KSAs can be obtained by proper training and expertise (Wang and Noe 115-131). Often at time certain attributes are naturally inherent in some people. The KSA required to effectively fulfill the above mentioned TDA for the general manager of KFC are listed below. Previous knowledge and expertise regarding the operational activities of a fast food restaurant chain. The individual must have at least three years of experience in retail outlet or service industry. Knowledge about consumer behavior in the fast food industry. Possess analytical skills to assess the performance of the employees. Develop leadership qualities to manage and motivate employees. The individual must also possess good interpersonal skills to develop close relationship with the employees. Assessing the needs of the customers and ability to maintain consistency in service quality. Possess good knowledge about the existing market environment. Ability to recognize trends and patterns in customer behavior. Profound knowledge about the IT system used by the company and other IT knowledge that helps in analytical activities. Good calculative mind, which will enable the manager to make accurate forecasts of budgets and make efficient use of the organizational resources. Ability to use performance monitoring tools like balanced score card or equivalent, with the ability to responsibly focus on profit maximization while maintaining the brand image of the company (Khadpekar 66-70). KSA Self Assessment Owing to my past experience at a fast food restaurant, I possess some degree of operational knowledge on how a fast food restaurant works and how the profitability is maintained at a desired level. I worked as a part time assistant cook at Mary Brown’s restaurants. I clearly observed on how a restaurant chain works and what are the managerial skills required to run it successfully in all grounds. I realized that the organizational success is mostly dependent on the motivational level of the employees and their voluntary engagement in organizational welfare. This is mostly achieved by the general manager’s ability to motivate his subordinates and at the same time keep a close relation with them. The manager needs to have good leadership qualities that will positively influence the subordinates to work with sincerity. Moreover, he must have a clear focus on the long term vision of the firm. This as a result will help him to ensure sustainable profitability, growth and strengthening of brand equity (Henderson 12-41). Since my position was at a lower level, I had different TDR to take care off. The role of an assistant cook required him to assist the senior cooks in their daily activities. I also needed to take care of some of the operational activities. The KSA required for this job role was mostly focused on the following orders and work under strict timeline. I realized that in a fast food business, speed of response in of great importance. I understood that the service quality is as important as the product quality to achieve a higher consumer preference. I developed skills that allowed me to do my tasks quickly thereby decreasing my response time and increasing my efficiency. Part of my job also required me to looks after the inventories. In order to perform that task I required having good mathematical and analytical skill. However, since I was not good at mathematical skills, it posed as a challenge for me. Moreover, my performance was also affected by my lack of inventory management knowledge. KSA Improvement Plan Acquiring Knowledge, Skills and Abilities is not a onetime process, but rather a continuous development of individual attributes. This allows an individual to constantly improve his skills and abilities which helps him to achieve higher performance level which is imperative to sustainable growth. Based on my current level of KSA, I have identified that I need to improve on several fields in order to improve myself and put myself in a managerial position in the near future. I will need to improve on the following fields. Improve interpersonal communication skills by making extensive communication with colleagues. Gradually develop my analytical skills by extensive training and voluntarily taking up challenging tasks. Improve mathematical skills by rigorous practice and guidance from supervisors. Develop leadership qualities that will help me to motivate my subordinates and drive them to voluntarily engage in their daily activities. Improve my analytical skills to efficiently monitor the market trend and develop business strategies. I will develop my interpersonal skills by focusing on the subject of organizational communication in my course. This will help to understand different types of personality traits and how they react to different organizational culture. This will allow me to properly communicate with my supervisors as well as my subordinates. The proper communication will help me to monitor the performance level of the firm as well as communicate proper feedback to my supervisors. Improving analytical skills is a relatively long term process, where I will need to focus on problem solving and pattern recognition. I will strengthen my statistical knowledge and gain expertise in tools like excel and SPSS. This will also help me to improve my mathematical skills. Moreover, I will also focus on the financial aspect of management, because a manager needs to be profit oriented. By following the traits of great leaders, I will develop leadership qualities in me that will help me to motivate my employees. Describing KSA to a Prospective Employer Being an effective and efficient employee requires a combination of both knowledge and expertise. My management studies course has given me enough knowledge to understand the current market scenario and has prepared me to face challenging situations. I have developed analytical skills that will help me make proper decisions and allocate tasks effectively. My good communicational skills will help me to improve my performance efficiency in your organization. Moreover, my work experience in a fast food retail chain has sufficiently prepared me to take up a respective position in this industry. Over time I have developed certain leadership qualities during my employment period, which can be leveraged to motivate my subordinates to drive them to increase their job engagement. Furthermore, I have a fast learning ability that allows me adapt to new work environment. Works Cited Henderson, Alison, George Cheney, and C. Kay Weaver.
