Running header; Gender Discrimination Paper Gender Discrimination Introduction In this contemporary society where the debate of equal rights for both men and women has dominated most forums, there are still some instances where people discriminate in terms of gender. Gender discrimination is a real ethical problem across the globe cannot be ignored by anyone in the society. Gender discrimination is experienced from homes, schools, work places even during job placement. To have an imperative understanding and argument of the subject, it is prudent to delineate the unembellished concept gender discrimination. It can be defined as a situation whereby an individual is denied an opportunity or being misjudged on the basis of their sexual orientation. It involves scenarios where by a person is shown injustice due to the same portrayed. The sources of gender discrimination can be traced from religion, history, philosophy, media, language, education and family among others. Gender discrimination is unethical issue and not acceptable. It is a common situation in most of the work places; but one point that is clear is that it is a satiation which is unacceptable and should be fought from all angles of understanding. Discussion Gender discrimination has still a powerful influence in work places and present as a serious moral issue that faces our society. In most of the work places, people are being discriminated in either rational or irrational way. The rational way will me an involving an individual in an assignment we are convinced he can handle with a lot of ease. However the illegitimate form of discrimination involves giving unequal treatment in relation to gender orientation. Gender discrimination in work places is when the business procedures and the policies are based on the illegitimate forms and levels of that harms certain groups of people in the society. Refusing to employ an individual due to sexism in him or her is unacceptable and is against the ethical standards in the workplace. Despite the stance rules set, some organizations still discriminate on gender issues in the pretence of specialization. The negation of this fact is that there cannot be a specialization based on gender activities. From a myriad of research studies, it is evident that most of gender discrimination at work places has been aimed at the women folk. Remunerating one form of gender in the work place higher than the other is an egregious form of discrimination at work place. The discrimination is anchored on the foundation that men don’t respect women and are inferior in the society. In some organizations, the management is dominated by one gender, with minimal or no representation at all of the other gender. Let use two criterions for participation of people in this discrimination. In some organizations, women are not allowed to be part of decision making. This is regardless of how educated they are. They, therefore, do not participate in the economic activities and, as a result, their education is insignificant. In some societies, education is a privilege first given to the male gender. The females are hardly given a chance to get a quality education as it is said that they do not need education, since they are supposed to look up on the males for everything. One of the reasons why gender discrimination is unethical issue is that it unfairly harms the people who are affected. In most occasions jobs are being assigned going by the gender orientation in an individual, ability to perform notwithstanding. In other cases people camouflage in the notion that some assignments are too complex and cannot be handled by a specific male folk in the society. Jobs that require a bit of technical thinking and performance are always assigned to the males in the society. In most companies departments such as the human resource, sales and marketing and administration among others are filled by women while others such as the production departments that require more of physical performance and technical analysis are filled by men. That indicates a very high level of discrimination in the company. Gender discrimination also violates the fundamental ideals of the moral equality, violates individual’s moral rights and also violates the ideals of the equal opportunity. Every one should be treated equally since potentiality can only be tested on practical basis and not in terms of gender. Everyone should be given an equal moral chance to participate in various affairs of the society. All the opportunities that are presented in the organization should be awarded on an equal basis without discriminating in any of the sexes in the organization. The gender discrimination on this basis has also been a concern on the basic grounds that it denies people equal opportunities in the society. Gender discrimination harm most of the companies since they do the best with the most qualified employees and discrimination in most cases prevent the most qualified from getting the jobs. Ability in an individual to perform is not on the sexual orientation of an individual but on the basic ability of the individual to work towards the attainment of the result. It is time unfair that very qualified employees never get an opportunity to prove their strengths just on the groups of weather being a male of female. Gender discrimination might lead to discrimination in the society. This will likely result from unfair and unjust treatment of either gender in the society; in most of the companies or even businesses there are a number of barriers in the growth of women folk in the society. In most of the organizations vertical promotions amongst the women folk in the society is very rare as compared to those of the male. It is likely that most of the posts are occupied by men. Women seldom rise into these positions as they are being sidelined, being harassed physically or mentally, uncooperative organization culture, bias in the form stereotypes prejudices in women’s role among others. This makes gender discrimination a big concern in the society. In the business sector, female entrepreneurs find themselves highly challenged when they want to start up an enterprise and grow it to a great height. They face a sought of challenges from getting and maintaining customers to getting financial assistances from the bank and other financial institutions. . Some analysts say that when compared to their male counterparts, the female entrepreneurs find it hard to acquire financial assistance from banks. In some cases, they are charged high interests when they get their loans approved .Some evidence exist which show that gender differences in accessing financial assistance vanish with the level of financial development. In some sectors, there number of royal customers who stick with female entrepreneurs is exceptionally low, and they hardly manage to survive and many ends up dropping out of business. Uprooting gender discrimination is proving to be a tough issue but efforts are made and laws a put in place to make the practice fade off. The practice is not a curse or natural. The nature has made people in different physical ways, but mentally, people are the same regardless of gender. The mental strength is the same. Even though, the distribution of responsibilities is based on gender, these should not be the case. The distribution should be based on equity and equality. The thoughts of some genders being designed some roles in the society is way past their time and gender equality should be the theme for every right minded person. Conclusion Gender discrimination is an issue which each and every person needs to stand for, the person being discriminated upon notwithstanding. In a number of cases, companies fail to get the desired results since they fail to give every one an equal chance. Most of the male members of the society are usually given priority when different assignments are being assigned. This happens in the belief that they are more superior and are in a position to handle technical duties. Even though the trend is changing in some companies and the societies at large, there are some minimal instances and the stereotypes which should be changed. Everyone in the society should be treated equally without any level of discrimination be it gender or any other variable. Instances of gender discrimination should be reported to the authorities as it is against the human rights and also the law. References Cohn, S., (2000). Race and gender discrimination at work.
