Film Response: West Side Story vs. Zoot Suit, A Comparison-Contrast.
West Side Story is a 1960’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The film is set in New York City and centers around a feud over turf between two gangs; the Sharks and the Jets.
The assumption of this creation is that these films exist outside of the controlling influences of the established institutional structure and thus are more able to question the established social hierarchies. However, there is something of a misnomer in this assumption in that many of these feature films are actually produced or distributed by smaller subsidiaries of the larger houses, enabling them to be created with smaller budgets, are given lower budget marketing campaigns and smaller releases.
Head-On is a movie produced by Fatih Akin. It is a representation of mixed cultures and tries to show an existing conflict. The main actor is a Turkish German, Birol Unel acting under the name Cahit Tomruk, who is in his forties. After his wife dies, he loses all sense in being alive and embarks on a life of drugs and alcohol.
