The girl with the wooden doll is a symbol of proletariat simplicity and innocence (supporting the David metaphor), standing up to all that threatens and embracing the seed of the future. African dance and the Beatles were seen as potential distractions from revolutionary focus, just as they are seen by various religious groups today as sinful distractions from Christian focus. The absolute present of the material images that engulfed Edmundo, separating him from the hustle and bustle of New York City, might suggest the way a church acts as sanctuary and a place set apart, an embassy of God and spiritual presence. His reference to patriotic hymns and his repeated use of the term redemption also support this. To see the dream and the nightmare is to encounter Kali (creation and destruction), or the Father and the Son (wrathful vengeance and sacrificial love). Haydee and Celia, political leaders in the struggle against Batista, were not in the exhibit, solidifying this revolution as a patriarchal religion. ...
I therefore see a patriarchal religious system unifying the various metaphors used. Edmundo: Photo Changes Photos are not static, if you know how to look at them. They change with time because images are like zucchini, taking on the flavor of what surrounds them. Photographs sustain relativity to socio-historical climate, culture, current events, observer perspective and attitude. As an example, consider a photograph by Ansel Adams, Moon and Half Dome, taken in Yosemite National Park, 1958. Until quite recently, anyone who looks at this photograph would see the majesty and timeless, natural beauty of Yosemite. The moon joins the powerful mountain to the heavens, emphasizing the verticality of Half Dome, The black and white medium, and juxtaposition of shadow and light, speaks of nature’s exquisite simplicity and honesty. That perspective of this photograph has probably been a typical one until this year, when this very mountain claimed the life of a hiker. The media described the horror of witnesses, who had to be airlifted out because they were too traumatized to hike back down themselves. The media has continued to report on more than a dozen deaths in Yosemite, this year. Now, when I look at this photo, I see malevolence, the interplay of life and death, the danger of nature, and the coldness of the moon. My childhood hiking memories are now threatened by a nagging suspicion of parental negligence. What was lovely and quietly evocative has become haunted and threatening, “Context of viewing is meaning (Desnoes).” Edmundo: Photograph as Metaphor A photograph may look, to some, like a static recording of a single fragment of life, bounded by subject, immediate context, background, and single mark upon linear time, In truth, ...Download file to see next pagesRead More

In semiotic terms, which essentially is gained through signs, symbols and signification, one can see that the advertisement actually talks directly to the people for whom it has been developed. The advertisement is targeting the women who believe that they have started to age and now is the time to turn back the clock in their own favor. ...The criterion of true beauty is, that it increases on examination; of false, that it lessens. There is something, therefore, in true beauty that corresponds with the right reason and, it is not merely the creature of fancy.” Greville The first thing that catches your attention in the advert is how beautiful the model is. However, that’s just pictorial semiotics to you and me as it becomes the vehicle of signification compared to verbal language of just telling the reader to go out and buy a hair conditioner. It gets our exclusive attention through the picture, or more exactly, to the referent and its ideological implications in the real world. Even to the point of ignoring the objectivity of the picture’s entirety... . But of...

Principles of Semiotics

...Semiotics interprets language that is expressed by us or others publicly. It is the study of signs according to Daniel Chandler. Signs generally refer to road signs, sign boards used in public places, zodiac or sun signs, sign language, etc. But, there is much more than these visual signs that are covered under the category of signs in semiotics. If semiotics is a study of visual signs, then it covers photography, paintings, art and architecture, sculpture, drawings and tattoos. However, semiotics is a systematic study of even the verbal and non-verbal language that includes words, gestures and sounds. As language with its signs and symbols is a sign,...

...and the brand logo are one of the most clear and distinctive ways to do this as can be seen, the Marlboro typical cowboy appears in this ad with the cigarette between his lips and the brand name also makes an appearance on the ad so as to convey the message clearly. Advertising is the manipulation of signs and symbols along with ideas and ideologies so as to put across a central theme to the general public and Judith Williamson also makes clear that signs convey some point of thought (Signs Address Somebody, 2004). Marlboro has done nothing more than use signs and images to push across the stereotypical male through this ad in order to generate an interest in their product. Semiotics

...Semiotics Throughout the essay a variety of metaphors are implemented. These metaphors can be formed into a system that can subsequently be decoded. In this context of understanding the system mirrors life processes as embodied by the Cuban Revolution and historical circumstances thereafter. One considers that the disastrous love affair is akin to the life process of a relationship that has blossomed only later to be exposed for the dark realism of existence, just like the Cuban Revolution. The metaphorical images of Castro and Guevara represent a sort of father-like figure to the child of Cuba, just as a child experiences its parents upon developing into adolescence. Ultimately, it is now the child’s time to break free...

...The Welcome Table’ by Alice Walker is a curious story that takes the reader into a scene which depicts from the beginning a woman who seems to be outof place from where she is. The story starts with the audience quite unaware of what is about to unfold in the next sentences. Noticeable throughout the story is the use of the author of colors in a number of her descriptions. These colors were used as symbolism in many regard especially considering that the main theme of the story is racial discrimination. There were quite a number of things modified by color from the opening paragraphs. The narrator describes her as the “color of poor gray Georgia earth” (Walker, par. 2). The color of the earth symbolizing that she is poor and does... not...
