Extract of sample "Democracy and Gender Equality"

One of the key principles of the United Nation’s democracy is the right of an individual to express themself. Democracy has made gender equality possible in many ways. As the word itself suggests democracy gives everyone an equal chance to express their perceptions on different aspects and to speak about the government decisions which affect them. The United Nations assures that women are given equal opportunity to participate in politics and thus, the UN provides long-term guidance for the administration leading elections.

Therefore, United Nations has adopted an agenda to guide and support women on how they can make a contribution to the country’s politics. For example, in the rural areas of China, the United Nations Democracy Fund introduced a project through which women were educated on how they can participate and contribute to the democratic process. UNDEF looks forward to activating them to take part in village elections, making the decision power of women more effective and strong, and giving them training on how they can control and look after public affairs in their village.

Democracy gives women an equal chance to participate in elections. Democracy has enabled a quota in each political party, by which a party has to allot a specific number of seats to women. Democracy allows women to carry out campaigns in order to represent their rights and to make themselves prominent among other candidates. Democracy also encourages political parties to make policies, which nominate women in elections as their candidates and support them throughout (Tommasoli, 2011).
