Primarily, symbolic interactionism has been the cornerstone in addressing how social life is structured symbolically. It focuses on how communication and meaning are created and how self-identity develops.

The diverse theories on society do not share their findings to come up with a conclusive and much wide explanation of human life and the various critiques in the field. Social psychology’s approach to social inequalities has been met with a number of challenges one is the skewed kind of approach by the social psychologist. For instance, while studying social inequalities, study on the major actors has been profoundly neglected (Hollander and Howard, 339). Little studies focus on these actors like gender, race sex, or economic factors.

Moreover, the social psychologist approach to this study focuses on the differences more than on studying similarities among different social groups.  Through the study, social psychologists neglect some groups while studying social behaviours. Other factors like a tendency towards essentialism and not paying much attention to social power and context have been affecting the study of social inequalities.

Questions

  • What is the importance of studying social actors in determining social inequalities as opposed to just studying human differences?
  • What is the practicability of the findings from social cognition and social exchange studies conducted in the laboratory?
