Norms are the set rules and guidelines in society that are expected to be followed by all members of that society. In most societies, women and men are guided by different norms because of their sex and gender differences. Women are expected to be submissive and not talk back or question their husbands or male figures in society. Men on the other hand are authoritative and even discipline women if they are wrong. This is an inequality that makes men and women different and even causes chaos in most societies.
Jobs expected to be performed by women are those concerned with home care and family care which are commonly known as reproductive roles while men’s jobs are outside the home and aimed at supporting the family’s upkeep (productive roles). These different job expectations continue to cement inequality in society.
Social interactions indicate the communication and actions performed by men and women in society according to how society has stipulated. Men and women interact differently. Women in most societies do not interact directly with men as it is taboo due to their superiority in society. Men however can interact with women but on rare occasions and it is usually through commands or for reproduction purposes.
The social organization in different societies is such that men and women live in different houses, men provide and women take care of the home, men offer security and women care for the family in general among other organization guidelines. These differences in the social organization lead to further evolution of inequality within the society. Men and women, therefore, end up living like total strangers to each other and only meet on rare occasions as mentioned earlier in the social interactions section.
Conclusion
With inequality being advocated for in society via the norms of society, the relationship gap between men and women continues to lengthen. Chaos and competition also start creeping in once feminists come in to try and change those norms to end inequality. The struggle for equality continues and though it has been achieved in most westernized countries, the southern countries are still experiencing the inequality problem as a result of the cultures which give the guidelines, stipulate the social organization, and the social interactions that have to be followed by all community members.
