In testing their hypothesis, they used 77 adults who were identified clinically to be suffering from ADHD in not only filling in their self-report questionnaires but also carrying out diagnostic interviews. To gather more information on their hypothesis, they also requested clinicians to carry out symptom scale ratings on the same 77 adults. They analyzed their findings with aid of statistical mediation analysis. “Additionally, they used bootstrap analysis and bias-corrected confidence intervals in assessing the indirect effects of dysfunctional attitudes and cognitive-behavioral constructs” (Knouse et al., 2013).

According to their tests and analysis, dysfunctional attitudes as well as cognitive-behavioral avoidance lead to the emergence of depressive symptoms in adults suffering from ADHD. The two variables mediate each other in impacting depressive symptoms in patients; they not only overlap but also have unique variances. According to their findings, it is also evident that cognitive-behavioral avoidance accounts more for depressive symptoms than dysfunctional attitudes.

According to Knouse et al.’ hypothesis, negative thoughts, feelings, and processes associated with cognitive behavior therapy contribute to increasing depressive symptoms in adults suffering from ADHD. To combat problems associated with ADHD, it is crucial for appropriate treatment to be administered to the victims. For instance, it will be crucial for one to develop more balanced and constructive ways that could respond to stressors. Additionally, it will be crucial for one to do away with the troubling behavior.

Many adults in society suffer from ADHD, and this is evidenced by their behavior. For instance, the majority of them appear disorganized, careless, and full of marital problems. Some also have problems in not only controlling their anger but also meeting crucial obligations in life. Unfortunately, they are part and parcel of our society, and we have to cope with them. To Knouse et al., society must try as much as possible to avoid doing some things that could trigger a negative reaction from victims of ADHD. For instance, society members must accept adult suffering from ADHD the way they are and try as much as possible to create a joyful environment for them. The creation of a joyful environment will not only aid in controlling their negative feelings but also do away with their negative thoughts about life. It is also crucial for society members to ensure that the victim of ADHD takes part in serious exercise; victims of ADHD occasionally find it hard to exercise. From Knouse et al.’s findings, it is evident that plenty of exercises will aid in not only refreshing the brain but also motivating an individual suffering from this problem. Additionally, society members must ensure that persons suffering from ADHD do not involve themselves in strenuous activities.
