This paper addresses the key issues of the development of cognition in children between three to five years. In this context, various theories of cognitive development are discussed briefly along with special reference to the cognitive theory of Piaget. The paper also looks carefully into the relevance of cognitive development during this age upon the development of other areas and skills of the child.

When it comes to the cognitive development of children, the name of Piaget is undoubtedly prior to any other psychologists as he first developed the theory of cognitive development or the developmental stage theory as we know today. As cognition is evolutionary and acquired in terms of developmental processes, Piaget describes four main stages of cognitive development that process and assimilate new information with the existing ones inside the human brain. These four stages are:
During the Sensorimotor Stage, the important development manifested by the child is his coordination of sensory experiences (for example, seeing and hearing) in order to construct an understanding of the world around him. The child acquires knowledge of the world through motor and reflex actions. The Preoperational Stage is the time for the earliest development of language. The child learns to use as well as recognize objects by images, words, and drawings. A stable conceptualization of objects along with mental reasoning also starts to happen during this period.
