WHY CHILDREN CAN’T SEE WHAT IS RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEMWhy Children Can’t see whatis Right in Front of Them There is increasing evidence that children are unable to see things within their surroundings as long as they have focused their attention on a certain activity. Indulging the brain on a specific activity, limits their ability to perceive things around them, either using their eyes or ears. Psychologists have been trying to explain the cause of this occurrence. Psychologists have therefore defined this as Inattentional blindness.
Inattentionalblindness is highly preferred in children and has been a cause of complaint for many parents and guardians. For example, a child watching television would not be able to hear what a parent says. Inattentional blindness is of a higher level in young children, and diminishes with age. The causes of Inattentional blindness have been attributed to limited peripheral awareness in children. Researchers have highlighted that when a greater percentage of the brain is dedicated to a certain task, then it proves difficult to process tasks are less important.
The primary visual cortex has been defined as less responsive in young children, focusing on a certain task hence leading to inattentionalblindness. Adults on the other hand, exhibit a high level of peripheral awareness and do not suffer from this kind of blindness (Roxby 2014, n.p). The article offers intriguing facts that seek to explain an occurrence that is very common among children. It is interesting to note that there is an explanation on why a child focusing on a certain task is unable to perceive things that appear in front of him or her.
Although Inattentionalblindness has caused many parents to complain, it presents certain benefits. If the activity, children focus on is of critical significance, such as learning in a classroom, then inattentional blindness prevents any form of destruction, hence children can maximize learning.BibliographyRoxby, P 2014, why children can’t see what is Right in front of them.
