Conflict al affiliation Conflict Nature of the conflict The conflict started a few weeks ago when a new neighbor moved into our neighborhood. The conflict resulted due to the fact that my new neighbor played loud music throughout the night. This interfered with my sleep as well as my studies. This has been happening for some time now. Despite my numerous interventions to try make him play not play loud music, the loud music still persists. I think my neighbor is obsessed with music and probably wants to be a musician. However, he forgets that not everyone likes to hear loud music, particularly during odd hours at night when they are supposed to be resting. He thinks that I am just being paranoid about the whole situation since he thinks it is not a big deal. He thinks am making the situation more that it seems to be. He also thinks that I am just trying to make his life difficult, since he played loud music in his previous neighborhood and never got in trouble with any of his neighbors. He knows that the noise is disturbing me, but does is not willing to make amends. I would like that we solve this conflict in an amicable way without involving other people or the necessary authorities. I hope that we get to talk and he understands that I am a student and need time to do serious studies in a nice and quiet environment and that I would like to rest in a quiet environment after a hard day in school. My neighbor interferes with my goals since he keeps on playing loud music, even after I have complained to him about the effects the loud music is having on me. My goals have changed with time. I now wish that he would play music at a low volume at night if he can’t stay without listening to music. At times he is nice, especially after I complain; he, however, keeps his music down for some days and then seems to forget about what we had we agreed and ends up playing loud music again. I have been reluctant in involving other people in our conflict. I have enough power to deal with the situation. Every time that I have a talk with him, he tries to minimize the loud music and after a few days he starts playing loud music again and this diminishes my power over him. I have the power to report him to the authorities or involve other people. He on the other hand, has the power to stop this conflict. He can either decide to play music through his earphones or he keep his music down. Power can help us solve the conflict in an amicable way or through the hard way. I can decide to go to the authorities and he be forced to keep his music down. On the other hand, he can decide to try and keep his music down, particularly during the night and he would have solved the conflict in an amicable manner. My neighbor happens to know that I am humble and would like to get him in any trouble. He is also a nice person and is very apologetic whenever I confront him. The conflict has altered my life in a big way. At times when I want to study, I am forced to go to a friend’s place, particularly when he is playing loud music. This is due to the fact that I cannot concentrate in such an environment. My neighbor has never threatened me in any way. However, if the situation gets out of hand, I will consider threatening to report him to the authorities if he does not want to keep his music down. I think he has more power to solve the conflict. This is because he is the one that causes the conflict to go on. I have more power over him since I seem to control him and I might decide to take up the issue with my parents or necessity authorities which might get him into a lot of trouble. Conflict styles I choose not to involve other people in the conflict. I use the accommodation, collaboration and compromise styles of conflict. My style has not varied in this situation. My neighbor uses the competition style of conflict. I keep the conflict going by taking a soft stand and being mature about the whole issue. I also try to be understanding and not try to be selfish. Life has taught me that I cannot always whatever I want. He on the other does not care to some extent about my concerns. He also seems to be stubborn and his love for music makes the conflict even worse. I have been the one who has been coming up with the possible solutions to the situation. I have so far proposed to him that he tries to keep his music down and if he cannot be able to do that he opts to listen to music through earphones. After raising the issue with him, he will try to keep the music down for a week before forgetting our initial agreement and starts again playing loud music. He has since warmed up to me and this is making things worse. During a conflict I pre-prepare some of the words and actions. The other person is not in the same situation to pre-prepare and his reaction is spontaneous. I sometimes think that he starts the conflict intentionally. I really do not understand why he keeps on playing loud music, even after we have talked and he even apologizes and promises not to do it again. I will take up the matter with my parents. Am sure they are also uncomfortable with the loud noise, particularly during the night. They will go have a talk with him and in case he does not change, they will report him to the necessary authorities. My parents also happen to very nice people and will try to solve the issue themselves and if it gets out of hand they will consider involving a third party. Assessment The conflict is repetitive and has been going on for a few weeks. I would like that the issue is solved and with involving any third parties. I sometimes stay in the library until late or go to a friend’s place so that we can study. My neighbor’s behavior changes for some time before it recurs again. The conflict also affects my health as am not able to get enough sleep when he plays music throughout the night. My parents haven’t said anything about it. I am sure that my parents are also affected by the noise, and would like to see the issue solved. There are no other conflicts since I never knew him before he moved in next door. I hope that he learns to respect other people and by doing so keep his music down. I hope that our relationship in the future will improve and we will be good neighbors. Personal intervention I express my anger by going out and spending time alone or getting in bed and try to get some sleep, which usually doesn’t happen very quickly due to the loud music playing in the background. I can manage my anger better by talking to people about what is disturbing me. This will help take away the anger.
