ment of Interest ment of Interest The human mind has always intrigued me because each one is unique and it is this interest that led me to apply for the Psy.D. program. I hail from a small town where I completed my high school. The healthcare profession truly inspired me and I was convinced that only this profession could satiate my desire to make myself helpful to others and hence I started volunteering as a patient visitor at the local hospital. While volunteering, I noticed the dearth in expertise in providing patients with psychological support during emotional trauma and the worst sufferers were children.
This revelation helped me set my goal. Down the years I worked with children and have had interned with several organizations such as MCH, BATSHAW etc where I honed my skills of connecting with young minds and working with them. Since then I have kept myself involved in various volunteering works that have helped in my holistic growth. At 17, I started by B.A. at McGill, Montreal where my undergraduate grades were below the mark because of the environment and volunteering commitments. However, my Psyc GRE scores reflected that I was more capable than what I delivered.
Though my GPA improved in the following semesters the damage had been done. It was too late to understand that in the field that I have chosen practical skills had to be supported by grades as well. However, I was determined to reach my goal, I could not give up on my dream because I knew I had the skills, passion and determination to become a good psychologist and hence enrolled for my Masters. I had understood my own mindset and limitations and helped myself study hard and in an organized and improve my academic records.
Few people get an opportunity to merge their avocation and vocation and I am among the lucky few. Having scrutinized my goals of becoming a child psychologist, I am enthralled to apply for the Psy.D. Program since it would help me focus on acquisition of sound clinical skills as well as provide a base for much needed application oriented research. My goal is not only to become a psychologist alone but become an inspiration and inspire others to provide quality healthcare. The minds of children are most susceptible and environmental, physical and emotional stresses can hamper them, sometimes irreversibly.
Being a research assistant at the Behavioral Neuroscience lab I learned about the relation between psychology and neuroscience and developed interest in developmental psychopathology and anxiety under stress. The Psy.D. program here will help me achieve my dream of becoming a practicing clinical psychologist with sound knowledge and skills of psychological assessments and proper treatment. I believe my skills need to be honed further and under the guidance of Dr. Arlett and Dr.Francis both of whose work on children and anxiety have inspired me even more, I am sure that I would be able to culminate my dream into reality.
