Download file to see previous pages The Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) was developed in the 1930s by Harvard University psychiatrist Henry A. Murray and university student Christiana Morgan in the pursuit of identifying personality characteristics and unconscious human desires (Bosshardt, 2004). TAT assessments generally consist of 31 different cards in which varying ambiguous illustrations and photos are displayed, asking participants to respond to their interpretations of what is occurring within each visual image. Internal conflicts or motivational desires are generally projected by participants who are exposed to TAT assessments, allowing psychologists to determine the personality constructs of individuals.

The Sensation Seeking Scale (SSS) was developed by Marvin Zuckerman in the late 1970s, designed to determine the level to which an individual prefers high or low levels of sensory stimulation. Questions such as I would really enjoy skydiving or Drinking and being rowdy really appeals to me on the weekend characterize the elements of the SSS. The Sensation Seeking Scale can be modified to fit the testing requirements of the psychological researcher, but generally consist of questions ranging between 50 and 500. A specific scoring scale has been developed for the use and analysis of SSS results.

Both of the aforementioned testing instruments maintain strong professional support as well as researcher criticism, both in regards to their validity and in the ability of researchers to create justifiable interpretations of the returned data. This paper will discuss both the proponent viewpoint and the consensus from those who support the strengths of these assessment tools.
