Download file to see previous pages... However, it is essential for American policy makers and the public at large to develop a more informed understanding of the monarchies and societies instead of creating negative perceptions in the minds of the people.
The negative media images outline the popular portrayals of the ruling leaders of the respective nations. In addition, it shows the formation of American conventional wisdom. The notions of the American public over the monarchies in the Gulf are based on two assumptions. The first assumption states that the regimes are traditional and confined in tribal social structures. Thus, the political institutions of the monarchs are meaningless and their form of rule is outdated. At the same time, the American public assumes that the regimes in the Gulf are weak and fragile. That is why Gulf countries such as Iran have long term issues with their monarchies due to social and economic challenges of the oil boom. Therefore, the American public assumes that traditional regimes of the Gulf require western assistance such as US military and political support in order to maintain their social, economic and cultural activities.
The books show that the roles taken by tribalism and Islam in the Gulf has changed over time. Thus, the concepts addressed in the politics of the Gulf Monarchies can be debated to get a lasting solution. In addition, the domestic political processes of the Gulf Nations can only be understood through analyzing the amount of wealth in the oil revenues and placing them under the state as expressed in the oil booms of 1970. This is based on the fact that regulation of wealth assists regimes in the monarchies to avoid domestic and regional issues as evident in the last two decades.
